I just bought a new gun the other day its the Ruger Single Six Hunter, in .22LR/.22Mag, and I plan on putting a scope on it as soon as I can decide what I want, the main purposes I have for this gun is to go small game hunting on the off season, and target shoot at long distances.
Now the fun part, Im not sure that I want a fixed power scope because Im going to be shooting at smaller targets at longer ranges, (I plan on practicing at between 25 and (hopefully) 100 yards with this gun) so should I go variable? I just dont like how the higher the power you use the harder its is to see through the scope. But then if I use a fixed power I only get so much magnification.
If it helps the scopes Ive been looking at are the Burris 2x-7x Electro-Dot, and the Leupold 2x EER. That what my choices pretty much came down to. I just dont know because this is my first .22, and Ive never shot at anything small with 2x scope.
Thanks to you all, and I hope youre all having a Happy New Year.
I have more guns than I need, but not nearly as many as I want...

Both the Leupold 4X and the Bushnell 2-6X (either Trophy or 3200) are more compact and weigh less than the Burris 2-7X and will provide excellent service. The Leupold 2X is very good in the woods for squirrels, but is of limited utility when you start talking about prairie dogs and such at distances over 50 yds. or so.

Thanks for the Reply.
I have looked at the Leupold 4x because it is pretty compact and seems to be a happy medium as far as magnification goes, Im just not sure that Ill always need that much power, but then again I do want to shoot at smaller targets. And I have looked at the Bushnell online, it looks decent, do you have it or have any experience with it?

I have a 2X Leupold on a Single Six. Almost enough magnifaction, but a 4X would be better. I have a 4X Leupold on the shelf for a project, but it might go on the Single Six. I also have the Bushnell 2 to 6 Trophy and a 2 to 6 3200. Both are great scopes in a small package. They would work good on the SS. What barrel lenght does your SS have? I have always wanted one with a 9.5" barrel, but have not found a used one at a good price.

For me it's a no brainer, when in doubt get it all. A variable will cost a few dollars more in the beginning but you will have both worlds covered. My favorite variables are in the 1.25-4x class cause you can shoot wide eyed on low power and still have enough at 4x for a little longer poke. Next are the 2.5-8's on rigs that are gonna see 200+ yards. I have no use for the 3-12's, if I need that much power I'll go to a rifle scope and be vewwy cawe-fuww ;-)
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I`ve found the 2 to 7 or 8X variable are good out to 100yds with a high power revolver especially when sighting in at the range, however, I`ve noticed that after a hunt and wiping down the gun that the scope will always be set around 4X. JFJ

No one has mentioned the 4X Weaver!! That's plenty of scope to 100yds for a revolver and the size is just right. I have two Weaver's on two Hunter model Ruger's.....one is a 2X and the other is a 4X. Both are exceptionally clear, accurate adjustments and reticles are relatively thin.
Trash them Loopy's...too much money.

Agreed on the leupolds - too much money. I have the bushnells (both trophy and 3200) and weaver. No complaints about either.

The 2-6X Bushy's are also good optics for the cash. I have several. One has lived on my 45-70 Gov't barrel for several years and has never flinched!

Good to know about the 2-6X Bushy's on the 45-70’s. I just brought my 45-70 for the Contender. Sense we are comparing variable and fixed scopes. I am not going to be shooting tweet birds with my 45-70. (Note that would be fun to watch.) IN fact, it is probably going to be less than 50 yards with heavy brush. Is there a good red dot scope that can handle the recoil?

Revolver, I know you just posted that money was not your primary concern, but I have a Bushnell Trophy 2x-6x in silver that will be up for sale in the classifieds soon after my last white tail hunt Jan 18th - 20th. It has been on my S&W 686. I used it to take my first handgun white tail, this past December. I got a holographic for my birthday, and want to try it out next year. The 2x-6x has been absolutely wonderfull on the 686. I have been shooting out to 50 yards. The 2x is perfect at that range, you don't even need a spotting scope. The image is bright and clear. With the power turned up to 6x, you should have no problems out to 100 yards. All right enough of the sales pitch, look in the classifieds towards the end of this month if you are interested. But make sure you let us know whatyou decided to top the 22 with!!
