I was looking at scopes yesterday and want to know what you guys think of the nikon 3-8 power hand gun scope. I will put it on a contender 30-30 10in barrel.most of the shoot I would take would be under 150 yards and then only with a solid rest.maybe I would be better to have the 2 power fixed scope.Tell me what you think.

I've never had one on a barrel, but did look through one when shopping last summer and the glass seemed nice and clear and the eye relief was fine for my arms. They just wanted about $100 more than I had handy at the time. It should work fine on a 30-30. I'll always take a variable over a fixed as long as weight, or eye relief, is not an issue. It's nice to power up when sighting in and for the occasion you need it for that 150 yard shot, although it will spend most of it's hunting time at the lowest setting.

Rod, too.

I have two articles on scoping handguns and both of them list good things about the Nikon scopes. The articles were actually referred to the 2-7’s but I am sure that would be similar. I would actually say under 150 yards a 1.5- 4 or a 2-7 would be just as good as a 3-9, but that is just my preference.

I bought my first one a couple months ago, it is a 2xMonarch and I've got it belted to my 6" 475 with a weigand base and 4 leupold rifleman rings and so far it's holding up. I usually lean toward Leupold for everything optics but I got a good deal on it so I figured I'd give it a try.

I have several Nikon variables on my pistols. They are a bright scope and adjust pretty well. One thing though the eye relief gets pretty short at the high end. I'd say down to around 9-10 inches. The Burris and others will have a greater eye relief at the higher power setting. That's the only real negative. If your 30/30 is braked should not be a problem or if you will be using it at 4x or lower you should be ok.
