I have been reading this site for asome time now and finally ordered my first TC. I ordered it from Jim Hendershot with an action job and a trigger stop screw. The trigger is set to 1 3/4 lb and feel sweet. I hope to get to the range this weekend, if it's not raining or snowing here in northern IL. I have a new .22mag barrel with a Bushnell Trophy LER 2x6. How about barrel break in for a .22? I would appreciate any info.

Barrel break, are you talking about a muzzle tamer? I wouldn’t think that a 22 Mag barrel would need one. If I don’t need a break, I don’t put one on there. But there are some barrels that definitely merit them!!

I think he is talking about how to " break in" a .22LR barrel.

Well the 22LR and the 22 Mag do not generate alot of heat, most bullets are lead with a wax or grease coating. You are not going to see any leading or copper build up with the few 22 bullets that are copper washed instead of greased or waxed. My suggestion is to just shoot it. I personally have never "broken in" a 22 barrel. I will only clean them when long term stoarge is involved. Most of the time if I'm shooting a 22 frequently I don't even clean it. And if I do, it sometimes takes 50 rounds to get it to shoot as good as it did before I cleaned it.

These are just my personal findings, your milage may vary. If it makes you feel better to "break" in the barrel then by all means go ahead.

I've heard many ways to break in a .22LR barrel everything from shooting 50 RDs. clean Shoot 50rds clean etc. until you've used up a brick of ammo to putting a voo doo hex on the barrel using a live snake, chicken bones, and a scantily dressed woman dancing around a fire, chanting. I personally just go shoot it and only clean it when it gets wet or has sat for along time.

Thanks for the replies, I got to the range Saturday and popped off 50 rounds. This G2 and the .22 mag barrel is the first new gun I've ever had, maybe I have read too much about barrel break in. I shot then cleaned the barrel 10 times and gradually let em fly. What surprised me was that even with a new scope and barrel the first shot was a bulls-eye at 25 yd. I moved to 50 yd and managed a 3/8"
group, if I don't count the nasty flier. The gun is great and I see a .223 and a 7mm in the future.

Sounds like things are off to a good start! What 7mm are you thinking about? 7-30 Waters is a great round for Contenders/G2.

I have heard a lot of good things about the 7-30 Waters but think a 6.5 or 7 TCU could work also. I deer hunt in the central UP Michigan woods, 150 yds tops. Last November I used a .270 Win rifle that I reload for. When I feel ready for it I want to use the TC. I want to target shoot, someday up tp 200-300 yds with the G2. I have shot .375 mag and .44 mag pistols, how does a 7-30 compare?

I think it kicks about like a 357. It is a really smooth round. I have not shot a 7 TCU, but from what I understand it is 50-100 fps under the 7-30 Waters. Just my .02 cents, but it is REALLY hard to beat the 7-30 in the Contender/G2.
