I would like to hear you opinions as to which barrel I should use for deer hunting this year. The 2 Encore barrelsI have been working up loads for are my 15” 257 Roberts, and my 15” 35 Remington. I have settled on a load for the Roberts. It’s a 100gr Nosler BT pushed by 37 grains of Varget. It’s deadly accurate with that load.
As for the 35 Rem., I am still tweaking the load for it. It show excellent accuracy with the 180gr. SSP and H322 powder.
I tend to overthink things and I’d like to hear your opinions. In my hunting area there are no shot opportunities over 145 yards. What do you think?.......

i have a few deer capable calibers. one even being the 7mm-08, which i believe to be a "perfect" deer cartridge. i still can't get away from packing my 35rem contender 99.9% of the time in the past few yrs. 145yrds is no problem for either one of those.
have em both ready, n use em both if the chance arises. i guess it depends on bag limits etc where you live.

242fan, I don't have either, but I would lean towards the 257, ust because I think it would be flatter shooting.
Both sound like they would be fun to shoot.

No question in my mind - I'd use the .35 Rem. I'm assuming you hunt in wooded terrain with some heavy cover.

The Elmer Keith mentality is coming out in me and I am going to have to say 35 Rem. It has very doable ballistics under 200 yards. But that is just my .02... so take it for what is worth.
It doesn’t heart taking a back up either. There has been more than one occasion that I am glad I took both!!!

I usually opt for larger bore diameter rounds, but I saw how accurate your 257 Roberts loads are. Because of its accuracy, I would lean toward the 257 Roberts.

Both are good cartridges for deer. Which are you most comfortable shooting?
If it was me I'd flip a coin. Take that gun to the woods, harvest a deer and then go get the other one for your second deer. If you have the cahnce to get more than one deer in your state.
I will do that when I'm charlie hunting. Use one gun for a few kills, then work my way back to the truck and get something different.

Big bullets make big holes for blood trails. That is why I shoot a 45-70 and 375 JDJ. I would use the 35 remington IF I had to choose. Swap up sometimes and try them both. I am partial to big bullets.

For under 100 yards I like the thump of a big heavy bullet. Small fast flat for longer shots.
Don't confuse shooting with hunting. Shooting is a game, hunting is a sport.

Obviously, either will do. I'd use the .257 Roberts first.
