Hello Group!

My son gave a Ruger 44 Mag, Single action w/ 7.5" BBL. I haven't had a revolver in the field in long time. The cylinder seems to have some play in it that bothers me. I haven't shot it much.
With that out of the way; I've heard you guys talking about oversize pins and Spring Kits that have improved your accuracy. What can I order now and install myself before I get serious with this gun.

On a second issue the local gun shop just took in a Ruger 357 Single Action w/ a 6" bbl (+ -). It is in just above fair condition with some minor pitting, bore great and some play in the cylinder. He will take $200.00...it that an OK price??

A little rotational play is not uncommon, in fact all my Ruger SA's have a wee bit. It doesn't bother me. If you have fore and aft play it is not so good. A few thousandths is okay but no more.

I wouldn't give $200 for a pitted Blackhawk. Maybe $150 if I was planning a build where I wouldn't be saving other than the frame.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Thanks s4s4u,

How hard is it to put in an oversize pin and spring kit? Seems like I've heard the guys talking about a Wolf Spring kit?? I've taken apart 100's of guns and don't see breaking this one apart as a big deal...or is it? I don't expect to get this up to freedom Arms standards but I'd like to clean it up as much as possible before putting it to the test and really spending time doing some load development.

Huntkng, a Belt Mountain base pin would serve you well for the cylinder play. It's no more than removing factory pin and install BM pin. The springs will be the same. Follow owners manual for disassembly, replace springs and reassemble. If you have fore and aft play, I believe you can get shims to tighten that up.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

KRal is right the BM base pin and a wolff spring kit will bring it to life. You may have to emory cloth your pin a little but the job is not bad for either project.

fore and aft play is best taken out with either a new cylinder bushing or by stretching the gas ring both of which require special tooling but are easy to do. The base pin will help remove wobble from the cylinder but rotational free play can only be removed by installing an oversized cylinder latch and is better yet with the addition of a cylinder latch block. These repairs are also best done by a gunsmith.

It does not have much fore and aft play, mostly laterally or side to side. I think that I'd like to start with a new pin and spring kit. Where is the best source to get these? Brownell's or is there another source? Midway maybe?

either one has them and they are both great to deal with and pricing is normally pretty close so you might just double check.
