Hey guys. I recently bought a 45 Colt Freedom Arms model 97 and
could use a little help with load development. As you may know the cylinder is shorter than the model 83 and the frame is lighter however I would like to use this for deer hunting. Was thinking of a 255 or 260 gr Wide Flat Nose bullet any ideas or experience in this dept would be most appreciated. Eyeman

I like 17.5 gr. of 2400 & CCI 350's with bullets of that weight in my 97, whether cast or Hornady XTP. The gun will take another grain or 2, like a Ruger, but the extra recoil offsets any slight velocity advantage.

For deer, I like 24grs H110 or W296 and a 250-260 gr bullet, cast, Hornady XTP or Nosler.

It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

I like the 250 XTP on 2400 in a JHP

I like the 300 Sierra JSP on 2400 if you need a little more thump

and I like a 250 HC Berry if you need a little less thump

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Don't forget IMR Trail Boss for cast bullets. Fills the case and gives mild recoil. Load data available at the IMR web site.
welcome aboard.
