I would go with a 2x Leupold

I would agree with Ernie, but if longer shots (100 yards) are common and you have some scoped handgun experience a 4x just might serve better. I prefer a 1.25-4 myself, but less moving parts is better on thumpers IMO.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Definitely a fixed power scope.

Snake,
I agree with Ernie, my Encore 500 has an 2x Leupold and shoots great.

I am not going to argue with the pro's on this issue. I have a .50 B&M alaskan with a 4x leupold on top, and it functions flawlessly. The only recommendations I can make, after destroying several other scopes, is go with LEUPOLD. My .375 JDJ wears a 4x Leupold as well. Neither gun has given me a problem since I put leuy's on them.

I have a friend that has three 500 S&Ws of various configurations. All wear 4X Leupolds. However, all of his many handguns are fitted with 4X Leupolds. They work for him. They also are satisfactory on my 375 JDJ, 454, etc.
It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

when I had mine I used a 2X and 4X Leupold as well as a 2.5-8 Leupold all worked but I finally ended up back with the 2X on it. The 2.5-8 was just more scope than it needed and when it comes to 2X and 4X scopes it's more a matter of personal preference. The 4X will give you a better picture further out but the 2X has a wider field of view and is usually quicker to pick up the target so my preference is 2X but you may like the 4 better.

I went thru 3 scopes/red dots on my S&W 500 (full house loads) all were high end..Burris didn't last a full cylinder before it was gone, Leupold lasted about 1/2 box before it went tits up..choose wisely otherwise you will become very good friends with the service department....but hey I do love the 500..oh yeah...ElDee

I never have been a big fan of Leupold, because of the high price, but my newly acquired 30-30 Contender is wearing a fixed 4X. Its been great so far, its tracking was correct and very clear at longer distances, and to my eyes this is where the Leupold leaves the cheapos in the dirt. I hear Leupolds service is top notch and they are made in the USA!
