I am planning on picking up a srh in .454 this year. I've wanted one for many years and want to make this dream come true. I have a .44 mag srh and love the feel of them. My question is this: Is titanium finish the only option? Every .454 I find is this finish. I just don't care for it. I'd rather have nickel or blued anyday. Thanks Mark

The Ruger Gray finish on the 454 and 480 is all that's offered. The stainless steel is a stronger alloy but it rusts quicker so Ruger put the gray finish on them to keep them from rusting.

I have seen those. I like them. The last few I found looked greenish to me. (colorblind.. maybe a different color!) I just checked out gunsamerica and found a few of the gray finish. So, was the one I was thinking of some kinda custom?

This from the Ruger forum on the subject, it's been beaten well:
many threads on this finish, do some searches here.
It began as a finish created by Stan Terhune, originally called (when WBR ran things) Terhune Anti-Corro. The first ruger gun-related product or "accessory" to hold a name other than Ruger.
It then morphed into what is now Target Gray Stainless Steel, with a few iterations along the way. It is available on several handguns and long guns made by Ruger, including some limited-productions (GP100, SP101, RedLabel, and others.
It is harder than the base stainless steel. It is more scuff-resistant than the base stainless steel. It is more corrosion-resitant than bare stainless. It is less-reflective in natural and artificial light by far than 'white' stainless steel, even "vapor-blasted" SS. It is applied with tumbling in specific media with baking/curing and a polish operation(s). If one seriously wishes a white gun, one may mechanically blast it away with conventional means, without chemical processes.
Anyone can make a white-metal gun, and everyone does. IMO, I find it more attractive than a boring white gun, far more practical for serious hunters in all weather types, as well as casual shooting out in direct sunlight; and I for one *wish* Ruger would market a single-action series in it!
Rod, too.

Thank you. As I said, I do like the gray. The antireflective part appeals. s4s4u, since your in Northern Mn, I srh I was referring to was at Superior Shooters Supply a few monthes ago. It wasn't gray, of that I am sure.

Must be in the northeast, Duluth-Superior? I'm in the northwest part of the state. I haven't been over that way for a decade or so. Beautiful countryside.
I loved the Target Gray finish at first sight, but if it came in polished stainless I would love my SRH 480 all the same.
Where abouts you at?
Rod, too.

Yes. It is in Superior. Nice little shop. If I didn't have the .454 dream, I would be looking at the .480. But I think I'll save up and send a redhawk to Reeder for a Mastadon or a simliar convertion. Thanks guys

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

That is a cool conversion!! I like the two tone one also. I like the Ruger Gray to the point that if they offered the 44 SRH with it I'd own one. It is very durable, as my 480 is 8 years old and has seen alot of hunting and there is no area of wear yet. That's alot of riding in a bandito holster too.

Beautiful gun, I wonder about the Redhawk grip and big thumpers like the 510. I never liked it, even in the lowly 44 mag. The Super grip is much more comfortable to me. If I were to send a piece to Reeder to work on it would be a Bisley, let us know how it goes.

You could send it to Magnum Industries(magnaport) and they could put on some kind of satin stainless finish.

I love the target gray finish and it was actually an accidental result of the parts tumbling process. It's really tough. My .475 SRH still has itsgray finish, but I had it removed on my .500 Linebaugh SRH just because. Theis is what an SRH looks like once the gray is removed (my .500 started life as a .454).
