I am planning a Elk hunt and everyone so far has said go to the heavier (factory load) by Cor Bon 275 grain. I looked this ammo up, and very impressive HOWEVER very expensive $80.00 for a box of 20, vs the Hornady 200 grain at $24.00 a box of 20. I know there is a difference, but please help me here. I am not arguing the weight of the bullet, but the cost of this ammo is a little high. I believe in practicing along with hunting with the same meaning practice with the hunting bullet. This would be to expensive. Any ideas, does anyone reload, I do not know how!! For this price I might have to learn.

You have a gun that is extremely limited in its capabilities without handloading. It simply is too small of a market for there to be a lot of options out there. I took the liberty of wandering around MidwayUSA and looked at what is out there for the 460, Dang that expensive stuff! I don't know where you saw Hornady 200gr bullets at $24.00 it all appeared to be north of $3.00 per round!

At those prices you could pay for a basic loading set up in a hurry and besides it is a extremely enjoyable past time if you like to work with your hands. I wont say you will spend less on shooting if you reload but will shoot a lot more! I figure that by the time I pay for primers, powder, cases (spread over many reloads) and bullet lube (I cast my own bullets from scrounged Wheel Weight lead that I pick up for free) I load 100 rounds of handgun ammo for about $5 to $7 a box if you don't count your time in the expenses. But last year I also probably shot 7000 rounds through my handguns alone. But I find it very relaxing and enjoyable. In fact I am headed to the garage now to load a couple hundred rounds...

I agree with cost of ammo issue being a major factor and handloading being the way to go. Before selling my XVR to Tig I was loading Nosler 260gr Partitions over a max charge of H110 and with a 2.5-8 Leupold I was shooting MOA with consitent 5 shot groups under 2" at 150yds and many under 1.5" using sandbag rests. I was getting right at 2000fps and a TKO value of 33. I would have not thought twice about using that load on anything in north America although there are those that think using a jacketed bullet on big animals and especially bears is insane. They seem to think they will just bounce off unless they are hardcast which I assure you neither the Hornady XTP Mag or the Nosler Partition will have any problems penetrating an elk and depending on the range a pass through wouldn't surprise me at all. If your not set up for reloading buy a Lee starter kit which has everything tool wise that you will need to get started and cost is between 100.00 and 150.00. It comes with the Lee reloading manual which has reloading procedures and instructions in the book and of course there is a limitless amount of help available here and you'll have the satisfaction of making a kill with something you made as well as saving a butt load of money. Something to think about anyways.

I purchased Federal ammo for my .460 a few years back in a 275 gr bullet. They were about $35.00 a box then. Not sure how much there are now.

Learn to reload. There's really no other way for most people to truly master big bore handguns.

I totally agree with 500WE. My 460 has been awesome. And even if the price of the more expensive factory loads comes down a bit. They are hard to come by. I've had some 200 gr hornady on backorder now since Oct 1. Reloading is not that hard to learn and it is something to do on those nasty days you wish you could get out and shoot. Don't forget about 454 casull ammo. Plenty choices in bullet weights and loads and plenty power for elk. Just a thought.

Definitely buy a reloading kit. A Lee Challenger Breechlock kit is what I bought 2 yrs. ago. The only thing I didn't like was the powder scale so I bought a Dillon scale. Much better. I load my own for my 460 & I'm glad I did. You have a much more selection of bullets to use for it when you reload. I use the 260 gr. Nosler Partition and my son uses the Barnes 200 gr. XPB bullet in his Encore rifle. So far our 460's shoot everything very well. You can get one at Midway for about $100 less dies. Get carbide dies if you get a press. Good shooting.

Kral is right! I would go with the 300 gr. JFP bullet that Buffalo Bore loads in the 454 for the Elk. Then I would buy a set of dies and start reloading to maximize the potential of your 460.

Have to agree on the handloading.

But if it's out of the question right now. Practice with the cheaper ammo to learn the gun, the scope, and get your muscles trained into a natural reflex. Then buy the ammo that you are going to hunt with and have short quality practice sessions before the hunt. Yeah it's going to be a little pricy but look at it like this. You get the once in a lifetime trophy elk in the sights and you are not up to the task and he slips away unharmed. What did that moment cost??

First to Fowler I found that Hornady ammo at Cheaper Than Dirt, I also found the Cor Bon 275 grain for $66 dollars a box, which is better, but still a little high I think. I will look into reloading and see what comes about. I really appreciate all you ideas guys, thats why I love this sight.

There are alot of guys /companies that can custom load for you. Just google custom ammo makers/custom ammo. They can tailor a load that will meet your requirements. This will give you many more choices than factory ammo.

You can't even go wrong with Factory Hornady, I have used them in .357 MAX up to .454 casull and they kill just about anything you can hit in the right spot. Shot placement is everything!

Thanks guys. I agree with with proper shot placement,just about anything will go down. I have heard of guys back in the day taking Elk with a .22, I would not do it, but it has been done. I think the Hornady will work, I am not knocking the other suggestions at all, I just think a 200 grain bullet will work, with proper placement.

If you're not reloading you're one or both of the following;
1.RICH or 2. Not interested in accaracy.
When the SW460 first hit the market I bought a box of Hornady to break in the barrel and then to have the brass to reload. What a surprise on the groups! You would think I was shooting 200yds+. TRASH AMMO unless 6" groups @ 100 turn you on.

Reload and you will pay for the equipment and get ammo you know will perform!

I never shot CorBon simply because I reload! They are suppose to be awesome, like their $$.

I developed my personal load before there was published reload info out there. At 100yds it will do 1 1/2" for 5 (benched and scoped). I shoot 300gn Hornady XTP's At 100yds it will penetrate 4 one & a half inch thick Phone Books concaving the 5th.

Thanks John. No I am not rich, but really do not have the time to reload. May sound like an excuse, and to be honest I will look into it. I think I will have to try the Cor Bon 200 grain DXP, I think that is what they are called.
