I know its most probably said on the forum somewhere already, but what is the standard 240gr good for? What size animal can you take up to 100 yards with your 44 with that? Have anyone use it here in Africa on kudu, gemsbok and bluewildebeest?

It is fine for impala, warthog, bushpig, reedbuck, bushbuck, the pygmy antelope and animals of similar size and weight. I recommend using 300 gr. bullets for the 3 animals you mention. For those unfamiliar with those species, they are bull-elk size.

Thanks. It will be the first time I pack a hunting handgun beside my bow. I have lost to many changes of animals that stand at 40 to 80 yards which is out of bowrange and there is no cover!

Just curious can you buy .44 mag ammo over there or do you reload or? Do they have restrictions on handguns for hunting?

I would recommend a heavier bullet too but a 240 JSP would work pretty well if you make sure to avoid the shoulder on the bigger animals. Of the 3, I tend to think the wildebeest is the tougher one of the bunch even though the Kudu is bigger.

I have killed a cow elk with a 44 240 JHP and it worked but did not exit. You'll want to take your 44 Ammo with you. I used 300 gr. cast bullets but if you use those then shoot for the shoulders. I highly recommend that you use a service to get your handgun permit ahead of time. Air2000 is one I have used with no troubles. Technically your handgun is supposed to have a scope on it and I would recommend that you have one on when you go through customs.

Make sure your PH knows you're bringing a handgun too.

Thanks for straightening me out shortrange...

Speer and Sierra both make 270-300gr. JSP's if you're a reloader. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a 240 JSP with proper shot placement if I couldn't get the heavier stuff.

Shortrange you can buy 44 ammo here. I buy normally Hornady points and ammo. We have a local powder maker with a wide range of powder. We also have some local ammo, but the heaviest is 240gr. There is handhunting places available. I use open sites, but it is my understanding that customs prefer scopes. We have a very strong gunlaw here and when you want to hunt africa I suggest to check everything first through guys thats been here. But watch the prices! Some of these places push there prices when the see dollars.
