Hi Guys; I just recieved my new SSK Contender barrel. It's a 12" 357 max. and I'm looking to get input on scope choices. My gut says Luepold 2x. I love the field of view and the optics but I'm new to handgun hunting. My average shot should be approx. 100yds. here in Vermont. Thanks!

For woods hunting go with the 2X- If you shoot open areas you may want to go with the 4X leupy
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I have had good luck with the bushenellelite 3200 2x6x32. Very clear and a stout scope. I have a leuapold 4 power on my 45-70 and prefer the bushenell.

I chose the Leupold 4X for my .357 Max and I think that it is a perfect match for this chambering. My .02...

I use Leupold 4X scopes on most of my big game handguns, it is a wonderful choice for the ranges a Maxi is suited for. I have killed deer from 250 yards to less than 5 (!) with the 4X. I find the 2X not that well suited for over 50 yards...it only provides 1.7 magnification.

Based on total trigger pull weight, my trigger finger has lifted well over 200 tons....

I have a 1.25-4x on my Max and love it. If you are new to handgunning you may find a 1x or 2x easier to acquire your target, but you will appreciate 4x once you get it down. A 2-6x would be nice on a Max as well. I have 4x on all my guns that have fixed power optics.
Rod, too.

I have a 2~6 Bushnell on my 357 Max revolver. It usually is set at 4X when hunting. I also use 4X Leupolds on my bigger bore revolvers.

I have a bushnell elite 2-6 firefly. That is the one with the big reticle and it replaced a simmons 2-6. I have it on my 14 inch 30/30 AI. I am running stiff loads with 150 grain bullets and it is great, I dont even want to look through any others since this thing has been so nice.

Of course everyone is different but my recommendation would be to start with a 2x and then move up to the 4 when you feel ready, or just buy a variable. If you are not used to shooting handgun scopes the 4 may feel like it's too hard to control and you may find it hard to get aligned quickly on your target.

If you are new to LER scopes, go with your gut and stick with a 2x. You can always add more X's later if you want more,
