I am trying to find the best round for my TC 460 with 16" barrel. I know there will be many who say shoot them all and see whats best, but as you know this is not the cheapest pistol to shoot. The main reason is for hunting, from Whitetail to Elk, and African plains game. Mostly here is the lower 48. I am also thinking about hand laoding, which is something I have never done, and really do not know to much about it.
Thank you in advance for you opinions.
Aim small, miss small..

White tail to plains game covers a lot ot territory !The white tail doesn't take much but something like an eland is way on the other end of the spectrum. Staying in the animal vs exit hole makes a difference too. Eland will require the toughest bullet, heavy hardcast lead or full jacket flat nose ,or a heavy premium bullet like a Barnes all copper or the Swift A-frame.
While there is loaded ammo available handloading will permit many more options with the ability to pick loads that your gun prefers [ accuracy !!].

Thanks, Mete. I know there is a lot of difference. But I would really like to find something IF possible to do everything, so I do not have to worry if I grabbed the right box, what am I hunting today, etc. Worring about changing scopes, etc. I know hide thickness is a big part. i was a taxidermist for 15 years, and have mounted many of the plains game, and just about everything under the sun in the lower 48. I have that reloading question up on the shooters bench.
thanks.

If choosing one load for everything, I would lean to the heavier side. CorBon produces a 395 grain (at 1,525 fps) WFN load that proved accurate out of the .460 XVR I tested a couple of years ago. JMHO.

i would totally agree but corbon has gone to a different source for their harcasts and now they're fairly brittle and i don't trust em, especially at the velocity the 460 kicks em out at. handload some beartooth bullets at that weight and it's a great load.

I was thinking the barnes 275 also. I love the look of the Corbon, and even the Hornady with that sharp point out front. I really do not like a blunt or flat nose type of bullet. Are there any others other than hollow points, do not like them either, home defence is another matter, my opinion not for hunting. The 275 by Corbon has that loo i am trying to get, without spending 65-75 dollars for 20 rnds. If I go to reload, are there more choices for? Especially that llok I am trying to achieve, with what I want to call a sharp point. The Corbon seem to have a very small hole in the tip, if Hornady would make a 275 with a plastic tip, would be great, I think.

Mike, do you shoot the CorBons? Especially the 275's? Do reload? I have priced these out, and I can not reload for what I can buy them for.

Just food for thought, so...

The 454 has taken everything there is to take on the plant. Pick a 300+ gr bullet and you will do well.

That is just MHO so take it for what it is worth.

I agree, and the Hornady XTP-MAG would be a good start, IMO.

Rod, too.

I'm looking into the Cast Performance bullet for the same reason, cost of reloading. I currently have the 200 factory Hornady FTX loads for my 15" Encore 460 and I'm planning on loading up some Hornady 300 XTP for deer in the Western NC area. I have a couple friends in Western NY shooting the cast performance 395 grainers on Bear and they work awesome as well on some of the larger adirondack deer there.

Cast Performance makes good products, and I have been happy with the way their bullets perform. Keep us posted!

Try some of each, and stick with the one that is most accurate in your pistol.

CPBC definitely makes good bullets, but I tried some of Dave Jennings' (Montana Bullet Works) in my .480 Ruger and .45 Colt, and they are just as accurate, available in a variety of diameters and BHN ratings, and look terrific. Prices are reasonable with quick delivery.

NorthFork makes a 260 gr Cup Point Solid copper bullet. Each bullet is made on a CNC lathe. The cup point is not quite as deep as a Barnes DPX. The cup point flattens at 1200 fps impact velocity. The resulting bullet looks like a bolt with a round flat head plowing through tissue. The bullet base has mini rings cut into the metal to decrease pressure allowing the bullets to be pushed faster than the solid copper bases of the DPX. They are not listed in the NorthFork site but you can contact Franz (owner) by e-mail to order them. NorthFork also makes all copper cup point and flat point solids for various rifle cartridges from .366 on up. I bought some 350 gr cup point solids for my 45-70 and 450 Marlin. I thought any of you who are stuck in California's lead free zone like me would be interested. I have been trying to get him to offer some .44 and .475 bullets as his designs are heavier for caliber than the Barnes all copper bullets. I sent a few of the 350 gr 45-70 bullets to a custom ammo maker to test head to head against 5 other premium solids like the Swift A-Frame. These included steel jacketed dangerous game bullets. The NorthFork had the largest and deepest wounds in the test medium IIRC. We're talking 56" of penetration IIRC. I can find the link if anyone is interested.
