Thinking of trading in my year-old Savage 223 rifle on a TC Encore Pro Hunter 15" barrel in 223. Initially, would use it for Varmints.. may upgrade barrel for Deer later.

Honestly only you can answer that question. If you would rather hunt with a Single Shot Handgun then a Rifle, then you have your answer.

In the years since 1982 there hasn't been a lot of years that I haven't had a .223 Handgun of one form or another. I have taken lots of different varmints on up to and including Coyotes with the .223 in Handguns over the years and hope to continue to be able to do so.

they are a lot of fun! you can ADD the deer barrel later. keep the .223.....

223 out of a TC with a good handload is scary accurate with pretty good range and power to.
