Hello all,

New to the forum and new to handgun hunting, well hunting for that matter. I would like to head out next fall for white tail in PA and am geting things together. I have a Ruger SBH SS 44 mag and love this gun along with my BH in 357, but the 44 is not a hunter. My question is what is the best optic set up for this gun. Since it doesn't have the ribbed barrel with the ring mounts, should I consider another handgun option?
I was considering this for a set up, what are your thoughts?

I'm a good shot with iron sights but assume that I would like something that I can see clearer for a longer distance.
Is there a better setup than these?

I would go with this mount, And Use the Gun you have with a 4 power scope.

thanks, I didn't consider drilling and tapping the gun. I was looking at a Simmons prohunter 4x32mm scope, it's 84 bucks. will I regret this purchase? Or should I focus on a Leupold?

If you didn't want to spend a ton of money I would buy a Weaver. They have really good glass for the money.

Welcome to the addciction of handgun hunting!
I'll second Mike S choise of bases. I have the Weigand on a couple of guns & love them. Rock solid. The one on Midway has a rating of 3 stars out of 5. Not good enough to trust in my opinion.
I will differ with his choice of optics. On revolvers I'm a red dot guy, specifically I love Ultradot products.
For me, at revolver ranges magnification is't an issue. A quick sure sight picture in any light condition is. Since I entered the bifocal stage that eliminates iron sights, but I've used a 30mm Ultradot 4 for 8 yrs with not a single hickup. It's been on a 44 mag, a guide Gun in 450, & currently a Ruger SRH in 480. Each gun had a steady diet of heavy for caliber bullets at substantial velocities.

I did say to use a 4 power, BUT My 44mag SBH Now has a Delta point on it.
But being that vannook said he was new to handguns, I thought a 4 power might easyer.

That is a sweet looking piece Mike. I'm one of those wierd guys that things a BH Hunter is prettier than a FA, especially if the BH Hunter has a matte blast finish. Must be the rib...

I have Leupold duel dovetail drillled mounts on all my BH's that are scoped.

I love this set-up but many others find the rail type works better.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I'll second the red dot, whether new shooter or experienced. I am taking scopes off for dots more and more lately. I D&T'd my Bisley 45LC myself, piece of cake. The great thing is I can slap a scope on it if needed, but a dot is the way to go IMO.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Do they make one of those Micro--type Red dots that mount directly to a new model S&W frame??

I would like to look at one for my 6" 629-- but I wanted as little mounting hardware as I could get away with

Thanks, I should have thought of a red dot. I assumed that for hunting ya needed a scope.

That's a sweet gun!
I love my blackhawks and have reloaded and shot thousands of rounds through each. I just never hunted and wanted to start, I have a few friends that are pumped about it and can't wait to take me out. I didn't want to dump a pile of money into it until I check it out. More than likely I will have a new addiction. I seem to dive into whatever I do whether camping, hiking, shooting.....you get the picture.
My Honey isn't that thrilled about it though, her Dad is a big hunter and she doesn't like venison much, but I do!

vannooch,

I have used the Weaver no dril / no tap mounts on 357s, 44s, and 45 colts for years without issue. If applied per directions, it will not loosen up. Additionally, if you decide to return to irons, the gun hasn't been altered. Just my 2 cents.

Welcome to HHM!

Doc

Thanks Doc, I was hoping that I could use that. I didn't want to get into the drilling and tapping.
