I think JD recommends the 270 (or is it the 275 grain Hornady).
For the 454 I use the 300 grain Hornady XTP. A good hardcast will also be good too.

I shot the 300 XTP in my 12" Encore 454. It was awesome on both ends of the gun. Sold the bbl and went back to my wussy 44mag and 240's ha ha! but seriously the 300 XTP did a real number on anything I shot with it. I did get some total bullet, jacket separation on several recovered bullets shot into wet newsprint (30" of water soaked magazines duct tapped together shot at 25 yards). Hornady will tell you they are not bonded bullets and sometimes will come apart (lead core and copper jacket) at the high end of their rated velocity. However they grouped well when shot at max with W296 or H110.
MAN that is a big hole, what did you shoot him with?

In the 375 JDJ, the Hornady 270 grain SP is the bullet for elk and other large game. Best of luck--Mark Hampton

Looking for a little advise on a bullet for elk, with the 375 JDJ and the 454 Casull. Thanks in advance. I have killed four bull elk with my .375 JDJ, using 270 Grain Hornady bullets. I have killed two bull elk with my .454 revolvers, using the factory FA 260 grain jacketed flat nose bullet. Going by these experiences, I have no performance reasons to want to make a change in bullets for elk in either of these calibers.

Still no elk with my .454s but I have used both 300 gr XTPs and 300 gr Sierra JSP on mule deer. I think either would be fine for elk but from what I have seen the Sierra does not expand as much as the XTP. I think the Sierra would do better if your shot was not perfect, hitting heavy bone or more penetration was required.

I can`t help with the 375 but with the 454 I use the 300gr Partition as I have a bunch before they were discontinued however the 300gr XTP is also a solid performer. I would list the 300gr Swift A-frame but they are so damm expensive. Good hunting....

Greg Which powders worked the best for you? In my .375 JDJ Contender, 12.5" barrel, I use 44 gr. of H-322 and CCI 250 primers with the 270 gr. Hornady. In my FA .454 revolvers, six inch barrels, I load 35 gr. of H-110 and CCI 450 primers with the FA Factory 260 gr. JFP. My loads MAY NOT BE SAFE for your guns.

Another bullet you might want to look at is the Sierra 250 gr BTSP. They shoot real well out of my .375 H&H and hold together well.
