My uncle is a die hard glock man had an older sw right out of the acadamy ...once he shot the glock he was sold ... Said the biggest difference was the angle on the frame reduced recoil and allowed him to get back on target faster. I have been out shopping fondling guns and getting prices .The mp fits well and is very user friendly for a lefty. This will be my tracking gun.I have decided i will be getting a revolver for hunting ... yea they are like chips ... you cant just get one ... lol. So there are my choices so far ... it will be an auto .45 acp.Prices are about the same .Lets hear the good and bad on these guns .. I know most of you are wheel gun guys but a little help would be apreciated..

I am a firearms instructor at my police department. Recently we shot the Glock Gen 4, S&W M&P and the Springfield XD in 45acp. Out of the 3 firearms instructors we all liked the Glock the best followed by the Springfield then the S&W. Just last week we did the transition training for the department. We changed from Berettas to the Glock. Everyone really liked the Glock and even the shooters that usually struggle shot really well.

You should look at the Glock in 10mm too.

I've never been a big auto guy but I've owned my share and I've always leaned toward the 1911's and I still love them. Here a little while back I had the opportunity to aquire a Glock which I had never been a fan of but then again I'd never owned one. this one was used in a suicide so I got it in a trade for well used Leupold VXII. I've since changed my opinion of the Glocks, they may not be much to look at but they are a very functional and reliable tool. I have the 22 and it's just one of the best shooting, if not the best shooting auto I've ever owned. I dropped the trigger pull weight a little and that made it even better.

You should look at the Glock in 10mm too. I agree with Gary, I'd look at the G20. A very practical hunting caliber and back up in the field.

XDM45 Is a darn hard gun to beat. Will hold up as well as a glock and is an easy conversion for the 460 Rowland! The XDM has a better grip angle then the glock IMO. Which really doesn't mean anything. I suggest holding one and comparing it to a glock.

Whack something with a 10 mm and your mind will be made up, glock 20 all the way.

I bought a Ruger P95 years ago and hated it. Between that bad experience with polymer fames and the sheer ugliness of the glocks I didn't try one. About a year and a half ago I bought a HS2000. It's basically the springfield xd without an accessory rail. HS makes the XD for springfield. I have since shot the xdm9 and the xd45. I really like the xdm and though they look wild they feel better in the hand than the glock. That said I bought a glock 20 this summer. Loving it. Killed a small buck with it on Nov. 7th with one shot from about 42 yards. If Springfied made the xdm 5.25 in 10mm I would own it but I settled for the glock and have been happy. I haven't completely decided what I think of the 460 rowland. Most 1911 platforms have a hard time with full power 10mm loads.

Glock! if your going to get a polly gun get the real thing. besides glock has a proven track record. the sw 4006s we have at work are starting to have problems. if 45 whats your looking at let us not forget the old 1911.
Everything before "but" is B.S.

NY,
Out of your choices mentioned, I'd go with the Glock - if you're open to other 45 Hi-cap options, the FNP-45 is a niece piece as well, about 6 oz heavier than the 21...but recoil is easy on that frame and girth.
I know you didn't ask to be swayed, but I'm a recent 10mm convert as well - bought a Glock 20 with night sights this year from a buddy of mine. GREAT shooting gun that'd serve you well for your tracking purposes and could double duty for hunt purposes, depending on your states regs.

NY, I shoot a Glock 22 in the limited major division and put 5000+ through it during each season. Some refer to them as plastic ashtrays, but bottom line is that they run and keep running. You dont have to be a master gunsmith to replace the parts, and there are so many companies out there that make aftermarket parts. Just to make you aware ahead of time, most of the aftermarket parts are configured for the gen1-3. This is because the gen4 slide fitting is just a hair thicker than the gen1 thru 3 pistols. Dont get me wrong, a 1911 is THE original 45, but if you want a no non-sense hi-cap go with a glock.
Just my 2cents, ERIK

ok outside access to ammo . Make a case for the 10 mm over the 45 acp ... i cant find any ballistic comparison charts for pistols ... What makes 10 mm better than a 45acp for hunting / dispatch...

They're both good guns so I'd simply suggest that you pick the one that fits you better - which will likely be the S&W. While the Glock is arguably a bit easier to "mechanic" on, that's not an issue for most folks. I prefer Glocks but cannot deny that the Smith & Wesson M&P line has better ergonomics.
Don't discount either pistol for hunting game up to the size of deer at close range. Keep the distance relatively short, refrain from taking bad angle shots and shoot a good +P load. I've taken four deer with four shots, (2) with a Glock 21 and (2) with a Colt 1911 and it worked just fine.

I would go with the mp45 because you can get a 460 rowland conversion and hunt with it.

I'm I the only one on here that likes the fine German engineering of Walther and Heckler & Koch ? Personally, you couldn't give me a Glock for free. Too many accidental discharges, and they are very hard to shoot in high stress situations due to the different trigger pulls between the 1st & 2nd shots. Once the local cops were allowed to carry anything they wanted, most of them dropped the department issued Glocks in favor of the H & K P2000 or Kimbers. I learned this directly from police buddies.
Don't confuse shooting with hunting. Shooting is a game, hunting is a sport.

Pasco- The Glock has arguably the best combat trigger, due to being the same trigger pull everytime. I am a HK fan, but it has different trigger pulls, not the Glock.

Why not get both? If my memory serves me correctly with a G21 you can switch barrels to a 10mm. Buy an aftermarket 10mm barrel that is 6 inches and I believe a 10mm magazine and your set to go. I also agree with the other post about reloading. It doesn't have to be expensive to get into. Just do your research on what you want. If your interested check out Glock Talk. Plenty of good info. BTW, if your an LEO you there may be a discount available.

Check out the thread on my hunting Glock. It is a proven killer and even with the stiock sights it is pretty much dead critter at 70 yards. reflex264 By the way the Glock is one of the best platforms for the Rowland according to Rowland. Use a real Rowland conversion and no problems. My hunting Glock: http://www.handgunhunt.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/112748/page/1#Post112748
