I'm new to handgun hunting and had a question concerning large caliber revolvers and recoil. Normally, do double-action revolvers kick less than single-action? I shoot a double-action .44 Mag with a scope mounted and the recoil is not that bad, but you gotta wear hearing protection! Anyway, just curious about single-action recoil.
Thanks,
JeffD

I don't think they "kick" less, but they do feel different under recoil. You'll find guys that favor each type. What is your gun? Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the reply. I have a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 mag with a 7.5 inch barrel. It's the stainless model and is topped with a Nikon Monach 2X scope. I've had it since 1998 and just recently got the bug to seriously use it. It's a pretty good shooter. I hunt in South Carolina and the deer are pretty small, so it should do fine. My Dad killed 2 deer with it a couple of years ago and said it did great.

That's a nice setup for sure, & should do the job admirably. The .44 mag in a 8&3/8 barreled S&W mod 29 is my main moose hunting gun, so as you can imagine I'd consider it a fine cartridge for deer. Once the bug bites, it can be hard to get over so just enjoy it. I got started 20+ years ago, & though I wander from handguns to bows, the handguns are never far from my heart. Good luck this year.

the grip design on a standard single action will cause the gun to "roll" in your hand giving it more barrel rise where as a bisley grip or a double action grip will push straight back, like vance said it's a matter of whats more comfortable to you, I shoot a 500 smith and 45-70BFR both are very simialar in power but for most people the smith is much easier to control. hope that helps

The revolvers are definetly my favorite to hunt with Jeff, although I do enjoy my Contender, but unfortunately my moose season has come & gone rather unsuccessfuly.

well vance tomorrow is opening day for deer and since I didn't draw for mulies I'm chasing blacktails, since my big bores are silent until I get my arm fixed I'm taking my 7-30 contender and my 6.5" 475 in case I get one under 50 which is very likely with blacktails if you remember what the west side of the cascades looks like.

I wish you luck Rod. I miss that country. What area will you be(or by the time you read this maybe have been) in?

I'll be around the southwest side of crater lake park not too far from union creek and I also hunt down between prospect and butte falls. it's about 1:00am sat morn now and I'll be heading out in about four hours, just have a hard time sleeping the night before opening day.
