I'm torqued, I only get the NBC Sports Network, Sportsmans Channel, and Outdoor channel and I do have another one but it's almost all fly fishing.

Just got done watching the Pursuit channel on the show about handgun hunting elephants. Absolutely awsome! 1 shot and hit the ground! Frontal brainshot! BAM! Handgun hunting has reached a new level! The 500 is my next handgun on my bucket list.. I remember when I started hunting with a handgun, my dad told me I was foolish. I wish my dad was here to see this show hunting elephants with a handgun.

I think Mark Hampton was the first to take an Elephant with the S&W 500. I agree the shot & kill was awsome on the show last night.

Awesome. That got me stoked. Africa has been a dream of mine since I was a young boy. My wife lived in Africa for 4 years as a child. And everytime she talks about living there it gets me stirred up. I may have to sell my house and live in a tent to finance it, but I will find a way someday.

I was lucky enough to get a smoking hot deal on a college trip to Tanzania for 2 weeks, and I have been nearly obsessed with Africa since (ha, like I wasn't before that) and cannot wait for the chance to go back there and hunt someday... Maybe by that time more countries will have opened to handgun hunting

I know for a fact it is, I have a 3" scar on top of my right wrist and a 2" on the bottom where they took 3 bones out, reattached most of the ligaments and removed one of the two major nerve bundles going into my hand. That was after having carpal tunnel surgery in both wrists a couple years before.

Just watched that show. He made a damn good shot on that Jumbo. I wonder what bullet was in those corbons?

I still shoot the bigger ones too, just not as much. No more 100rd outings with the big bores.
unless it was a custom load it looks like the only solids they list for the 500S&W are the 440 and 500gr hard cast.

yeah, those bullets out of the corbons are a little fragile imho compared to some others, i forget the name of the bullet they use. great performance and hard to argue with though.

They also load Penetrators, but I don't think they make them for the .500. The Penetrator is a good bullet.

CorBon is the only one to commercially load them, so I think they produce them.

I shoot there 300 grain jacketed softpoints from my 45 bisley. I backed up my son when he shot his buff and put 3 rounds in the buff. two were broad side and complete pass thrus. And the third was angling away and penetrated from the ribs thru to the offside chest and lodged up under the hide. The one I recovered, If I remember correctly, only lost 15 or 20 grs of weight.
My bad, getting old sucks. I used the 335 gr gas checked LFNs from grizzly on that buffalo. Never mind the old age creeping in!

I wonder if a wrist support can be fashioned that would ease the damage done by the big boys. I think I am going to get together with a doctor buddy of mine and do some experimenting.

cfish, my shooting gloves, by a company called Pro-Aim, have a plastic wrist support built in. I am really happy with them.

I'll have to look into those, I normally just use uncle mikes but I do have the S&W glove. They sell them individually and the glove supports your wrist and has a ton of padding in the palm which is why I don't use it much. I like to feel the gun as much as possible, these were made for limp wristed macho men buying the 500 for the big factor. The funny thing is to me the X frame wasn't all that impressive in recoil but then again I've always pushed things. I'm sure if I ever get one chambered into a max frame it will meet my standards, I like to call my rating system the "Concussion Factor". The closer it gets to your forehead the higher the score and if more than one hits your forehead then grading goes to the Dr. based on the severity of the concussion. I can honestly say out of 9 concussions only one was caused by a gun and that was my stupidity.

Rod, these gloves aren't overly padded -- that's what I like about them, but they do offer wrist support. I too never found the X-frame to be all that punishing even loaded hot. They are bulky and weigh a bunch. But they are extremely concussive.

That was a great hunt to watch, thank you for posting it for us! Would anyone know how I can find more dangerous game hunts with handguns? I have of coarse, tried youtube.
