I will be hunting with a SBHH this year and would like some advice on ammo. Hollowpoints like Win. Platinum Tip or BB Deer grenade, or something like a 300 gr hardcast from Buff Bore or another premium maker? Our Mississippi deer aren't that big, 200 lbs is a big one. Not set up to reload yet but hope to be soon. Any advice appreciated.

it's really not that overly complicated. about any 44 mag load will take a deer just fine. it does not have to be fancy! this past season for example....i did not take/have time to load up my ammo, so....i just went n bought a box of win. "white box" factory ammo. just a simple, mild load with a 240gr jhp. fancy is fine....but plain vanilla works as well. just get in plenty of practice with whatever you use.
Kentucky….no place like home.

44 is a good choice for deer. Shoot several different brands, and types of bullets. (Hard cast, jsp, jhp) See what shoots best out of YOUR gun. My SBHH shoots best with heavier bullets, 300gr xtp, so thats what I hunt deer with. If it however, shot best with something else, I'd be hunting with something else. "Hittin close" with a super whiz bang hard-jacketed-hollow-cast-ballistic-point-nuclear-alloy bullet aint gonna be better than a plain ol' 44 slug right in the boiler room every time. Get a good selection of hunting ammo, and enjoy the hunt with what shoots best from your weapon. Good luck with nxt deer season, and God bless.

See what shoots best out of YOUR gun. Those are my feelings right there. I have used and shot both. Not nearly as much as some users on this wonderful sight... LOL Long story short IMHO, they both have their place and they both will work just fine if you put the bullet where it needs to go!!

The one (240 gr or heavier) that shoots best in you revolver.
It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

Whatever is the most accurate from your Ruger, jacketed or lead, to whatever distance your comfortable with will take a whitetail as long as its in the right place. Put a 240gr bullet through the lungs of any deer, follow the blood and find your deer. Best of luck and good hunting......

Thanks for all the responses. I was interested in everyone's experiences with the different bullet types, and if there had been any catastrophic failures with either. Got what I wanted, good info. Rest assured, I know placement is key and I appreciate the reminder on practice.

I have used Hornady XTP's more than anything else ( also have used some cast with success too), and have had no problems whatsoever.

I have used Hornady XTP's more than anything else ( also have used some cast with success too), and have had no problems whatsoever. This rather closely mirrors my experience as well. It is just jackted or hollow point VS hard cast it is which type of each. There are some jackted that I would have no qualms useing and the same with hard cast. There are some hard cast that I would not want to hunting as well. Over all I have settled on awide meplat hard cast and could not be happier. They atr effective on deer IME as well as much larger game YMMV

I think most would agree more whitetail deer have been taken with a 245 grain Keith SW, over enough 2400 or similar powder to drive it at least 1000 fps than all others oombined. Steve

Steve Where did you get that statistic? Sorry but I don't agree; I think jacketed and other bullet type kills would be more prevalent than your statement "more whitetail deer have been taken with a 245 grain Keith SW,... than all others oombined." For SP, I believe you mean "combined." Your opinion vs. mine. Is there any real data out there, or just opinions?

It is not as simple as hard cast vs jacketed. All hard cast bullets are not created equal and neither are all jacketed. The Sierra JHC (jacketed hollow cavity) has a 1 1/12 percent antimony core and a fairly heavy jack, this bullet doesn't over expand and penetrates well. The Remington SJHP ( semi jacketed hollow point) has a thin scalloped jacket and the core is pure soft lead. This bullet expands quickly and will open as large as a 1/2 dollar, therefore is not a deep penetrate IME the pentration is about like a 45 ACP with hard ball ammo.
Unless a hard cast has a wide meplat then the wound channel will not be as large as it should be IMHO
Often the question in these thread is which caliber is best for hunting ___________ (fill in the blank) The answers are on caliber for the intended game, not which caliber a new shooter should start with.
I started handgun hunting with a 357 magnum and moved up gradually and that is the best approach IMHO

I agree with JWP. Just a look at the 240 gr XTP shows a good deer bullet, yet stop and think. I shot a few behind the shoulder and recovered every bullet. No back tracked blood trails. How about bone or quartering shots? Go to the 300 gr and you have bone smashing along with better penetration. A hard cast with a good meplat works. A hollow point on a hard cast does nothing, might shatter the nose. Use the right alloy for some expansion and a hollow point is OK if you retain penetration. It is always bullet performance inside the animal before exit. You really do want bullet exit. JWP is on the money that all jacketed are not equal either, some for light skinned and some for big and tough. Here are 240 XTP's with no bone hits.

All very good responses. Again, I wasn't trying to stir up anything, just looking for info. My shots will be close and I won't take any iffy shots. I'm going to try a few loads and see what shoots best and decide. Bear with me, the last handgun hunting I did was with a custom Condender in .444 back in the eighties and I didn't worry as much about bullet selection back then. Thanks.

you didn't stir up anything, this has been going on for years but most of us have lightened up enough to where we just mess with eachother in fun. There are still those that take it too far but for the most part it's mellowed. The most important thing is that you have confidence in whatever your using.

I guess you missed the sarcasm in my suggestion. Sure did; no sarcasm in your straight posting. Got to use the emoticons, Whit, that's what they're for: to give the reader an idea of what mood the poster is in; what context the post is meant in, etc.
But reading most of your posts the past years, I am pretty sure that WAS a sarcastic post.

LOL and LOL Bad me CFish... I will go sit myself in the corner... Gregg, No I didn't take that wonderful picture. I confiscated it from a post over on Cast Boolits. That is a 41cal mold with a HP option and a 70% nose profile that can be PB or GC. I would really like to have one for my 414 SM. It is a group buy mold that will hopefully get enough interest to make it to the production level... Here is another picture. 41 Cal NOE Bullet Mold A picture of a couple of molds.

Great looking projectiles there Tex.
Get a good bullet period. jwp said it best all jacketed and cast are not created equal. get a good bullet and shoot some stuff placing them in the right spot and collect your game.
