Which animal is the most fun for you to hunt with a handgun. For me it's hogs. How can anything be more fun than hunting a walking pork chop? What animal does it for you? At the end of the post I am going to tabulate the critters to see what most of us like to do. reflex264

Small game for me.........rabbits and grouse! (no squirrels here) Lots of targets, long seasons, good eating.........
I've shot them with everything from 22 auto/6 guns to a FA 454. It don't get no better than that.

Fun has to be small game. Grouse and bunnies. Exciting has to be elk and deer. If you Texans would push a little harder with the hogs, I might be able to join in on that fun here in NM.

I love hunting anything I get the opportunity to, but I'd say small game is the most fun; for same reasons as stated above.

I agree with Southarkrob. Deer & exotics. The rest is just killing for me.
It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

There is nothing like jump shooting bunnies and grouse with the 10" 45/410 Contender, a 22/45 on the hip for those more stationary targets.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Please allow me to answer with two categories: Small Game and Big Game:
For the most fun to hunt Small Game (IMO) would be Prairie Dogs. In the olden days at the Durham Ranch and a few other places I had some 175 to 250 dogs "kill days." Now that is pure handgun fun!
IMO for Big Game: Definitely Mule Deer. There is nothing more fun than hunting mule deer in open western country where your optics are your best friend: ie: Spot and Stalk, big time. I can tell stories of seeing both mulie bucks and whitetail bucks within the same field of view of my binos; and it goes on from there!
And when you finally choose the buck you want to stalk using your handgun, it gets even better due in part to all the prior build-up of emotions and expectations and then finally the fruition: success or ???

I should have asked the question with a small game and big game catagory. Interesting so far. One thing I can say. Between the packing thread and this tread we are a very diverse group. reflex264

Whitworth....when you have killed as many as my dad and I have killed ...you will literally hate them too...love eating them ...but I cant stand skinning a hog...I would rather skin 10 deer than one big hog. My dad used to have a pack of hog dogs and for over 10 years he hunted them literally every day. I have come home from work and helped him skin 8 to 10 hogs at a time. (all the meat got eaten ...most given to the needy). We still trap a few on our place. On the other hand if my Dad has a big buck and a big hog in front of his stand....the hog is the one in trouble!!! He loves em!!

Southarkrob- I think I wish I had your problem as long as the hogs were somewhere besides here.
I never get tired of deer even though I have killed hundreds of them. reflex264

They are a lot smarter than many animals, particularly deer. They are a drag to skin, I agree!

For small game I like the various 'squirrels' ground or tree dwelling. Taking one of those little Columbian or Richardson devils with an open sighted revolver can really test your shooting ability. As for big game, it's got to be bears, no hounds, no bait, spot and stalk with a little calling thrown in. When you're on the ground, inside a 100yds with a critter that can 'kill and eat' you, it definately gets the blood pumping.
It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

If they arent in your hunting area....PRAY that they dont make it there!! I can plant my food plots this weekend and Monday they will be destroyed....have gotten pretty good at reassembling deer feeders..hogs can literally destroy them!! They will come thru your property and eat almost everthing that a deer needs to survive. I like shooting them...

I like hunting them because they have a lot more activity between their ears than many other animals. They can be challenging.

For me over the years, the most fun game that I have hunted with a handgun is the Canadian moose. Of course this has been in New Hampshire. The interval between permits is tough. Some people never get drawn.
Too bad Canada didn't allow handgun hunting. I'd go up every two years for moose, bear and then winter caribou.

Yes, I agree on the stupid Canadian ""no handgun hunting"" laws!!
I would do whatever it took to make a Stone Sheep hunt if it was legal!!
We talk a lot here in Alaska of how nice it would be to form our own country, including Alaska, Yukon, British columbia, NWT,!!!!!! What a hunting preserve that would make!!!

Bears with hounds. You said hunting not killing so for me the thrill is all in the music. Squirrels/rabbits would be my second choice.

i would say the bear hunts i've been on are the most exciting, but i think it'd be hard to beat cape buff/lion/elephant hunting in africa with my handcannons.

I have only hunted deer with a handgun so far, but hogs are coming right Whit?!
The God who gave us such a beautiful land, wonderful game, and the sport of hunting is worth knowing.
