Has anybody worked up +P+ loads for the 45 Colt with HS-6? I can only find "cowboy" data so far for the 45 Colt, but there are heavy recipes for the 44 Rem and the 45 Win mags. I was going to extrapolate from those for starters, but would appreciate any input from those that have already been there. My H110 load is fairly stout and am looking for something a wee bit mellower but still with enough snuff for big game, say in the 1,200 FPS range with a 250 XTP.

I don't have a +P+ load but maybe this might help you some:
From a 6" barrel 13.0 grains of HS-6 will push a 300 grain cast 1,051fps using WLP primers. Shoots pretty good too.

Yea, I guess it would be more like +P wouldn't it... I know that the gun will handle more than what I have found in the manual. I use HS-6 in the 45 ACP and light 357's, but figured it should work for a reasonable hunting load with a little less recoil than full house H110 loads.

s4s4u, I don't have any experience with the HS-6, but 2400 works really well for what you're wanting.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

S4,
While not quite apples to apples, I have worked with HS6 for light loads in my 454. It does respond very uniformly while increasing the charge. In working with 250 XTP's, I finally stopped at 1100 fps. I wanted a load that would also be easy in my Puma 454, and the Puma tends to start sticking brass earlier than my M83 454. So in using this as a "pressure" sign, I hit the ceiling at 1100 fps (in the pistol). Not saying that you cannot get to 1200 fps, but it might be close depending on the gun you are using. My M83 has a 4 3/4 inch barrel, by the way, so if yours is longer, you might be OK.

I have heard of folks using 2400, and might give it a try, but was hoping to stay with what I have on hand. In working with 250 XTP's, I finally stopped at 1100 fps. That would probably do. I see in the 44 Rem and the 45 Win mag data that about 15 grains, + or -, of HS-6 is max and runs right around 1,200. I'd feel safe with that in my Ruger Bisley 45 Colt as well, but thought I'd ask around. What charge got you to 1,100 fps?

Rod,
I would be a little leary of posting this, as I was working with 454 cases, so your available volume will be a little less. In my Hodgdon's 27th they list HS6 in standard Colt pressure loads as a min of 9.7 and a max of 10.8 for a top pressure of 13,500 cup with the 250 XTP. Winchester case, WLP primer and a 7.25" barrel. COL 1.595.
I'd perhaps start at 10 and creep up some ;^) I would suggest keeping your increments closer to half a grain or smaller if you have the patience.

I have that same data, but my H110 loads are nearing the 30,000 CUP range so know there is room for more. I wouldn't eat it all in one bite. I think I may start with slightly less than 7P's load, and work up from there.

s4s4u. May I suggest you go to John Linebaughs website for a little light reading on his thoughts about the marvelous 45Colt. I think there are some loads with HS6 in there somewhere.

The only Ruger and contender loads I can find for HS-6 are in the # 13 Speer manuel. They list 13.6 to 14.6 grn. for the 200 grn.bullet @1220 to 1313 fps.
The 225 grn. bullet takes 13.0 to 14.0 grn. @ 1146 to 1198 fps. Magnum primers are recomended with this powder. For the 260 grn and 300 grn they go to HS-7.
Hope this helps.

Linebaugh's loads for the 45 Colt are listed here. He lists 14gr start (1130fps) and 15gr max (1225fps) for the 250xtp with HS-6 powder. Hope this helps.
