I had shoulder replacement three weeks ago which has taken me out of rifle hunting for at least 6 months. Surgery went extremely well and I have found myself driving within 9 days from surgery. With that being said, I was driving over to our property this past week and twice I spoted the same group of Red Deer, the group had a shooter stag. First time I was gunless. Second time I had my Dan Wesson 357 mag but the stag was at 90 yards and I did not see the 357 mag a wise choice. We have Axis and Fallow ocasionally come thru and plenty of whitetal. This last week is the first time I started to see the Red Deer So today I went and found a Super Redhawk 44 mag with a 9 1/2 barrel. Extremely clean and tight. Had a 44 mag in the past but made a mistake of selling it. Hopefully this Ruger will soon see some action.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

If you needed a reason, glad you found it. Enjoy!
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Now you need to swap the NEW Rings back to Ruger for a set of 30mm ones. Order a 30mm UltraDot from http://Ultradotwest.com/Get a Scope Coat for the UltraDot while you are making the order. Then an order to Midway and get a Green Fiber Optic Front sight for back-up, and a set of Hogue Tamer Grips. Now it is perfect. I bagged an 8 point whitetail this evening with my 480 Ruger Super RedHawk. Set up as described above. Enjoy the Super RedHawk. Bob

No doubt the Ruger is a good choice but if your motive for getting the .44 mag is that it will give that much more superior performance at 90 plus yards on deer sized game than the .357 will, I am not sure you made the best choice.
It may give a bit more but if you are really looking for 100 yards plus performance on a regular basis, a better choice may be one of the "rifle" type calibers in a single shot platform. Or if you are really serious about a "longer range revolver" take a serious look at the .460 S&W.
The revolver's real job for most of us shooters is in the 0 to 100 yard category, for the most part. Then if you scope it, that can add some range to it's capability if YOU are up to it but not nearly as much as starting with a Single Shot pistol in a bottleneck cartridge configuration.

Great deal! Good luck with the shoulder and critters! Your Ruger will get em at 90 yds.

Nice buy. 90 yds is a easy drive for my 10" 44 so yours should easily get it done if you are up to it. We will need picture for verification though.

Great gun, keep us posted on the red deer situation :-)
The God who gave us such a beautiful land, wonderful game, and the sport of hunting is worth knowing.

There are a lot of bigger choices, but at the end of the day, the .44 Mag., will do the job, if you do your part and not tear up your "new shoulder".
A good purchase ..

A good purchase .. I am right handed but left eye dominant so I always shot a rifle lefty using my left shoulder which is the one that has been recently replaced. I shoot handguns with the right. So I,m thinking I'll be okay with caution and care. Not sure if I'll ever saddle up the 1895 GG in 45/70 again against the new shoulder.

"Cross eye dominant", another real challenge. If you shoot with any sort of two handed hold the recoil is still transferred to both shoulders.
Everything in North America has been killed with a .357 mag.,the .44 mag, gives an appreciable margin for error. I am not sure how we came to the mind set that if it is not "painful" to shoot it must not be "big enough".
My uncle a "dirt poor" farmer, in order to feed his family probably killed more deer with a .22LR rifle than any ten people on this forum.
The real wrist breaker magnum shooters, are blithely headed for detached retinas and a number of other problems as the "wheel turns" and we all get older.

Very nice! I'm starting to have shoulder problems myself and I find it better to shoot my handguns over long guns.

358,
Cross dominant shooting can create all kinds of issues, as I struggle with it. I have no proof of this, as I have stopped before going that far, but with big boomers it's hard to get the recoil forces lined up properly between the hand/wrist/arm so that your wrist is not going to be a mess after years. Whether the gun is slightly rotated in the hand, or your head and neck are a bit out of position, something has to change.
For me, letting up on the throttle is a bit easier than learning to shoot left handed ;^)
Oh, when I shoot my guide gun, I blink at the shots to keep my retna's in place ........

Been shooting and loading for 44M right at 50 years now. IMHO, it is the most flexible and sensible handgun caliber out there......plus it's fun to shoot.
Good luck with your recovery. Several back surgeries forced me to give up shotguns and recoiling rifles, but still am able to deal with the 44M without any problems.

I don't know if you wear glasses or not ,but a small piece of tape in front of the dominate eye causes the other eye to take over .It doesn't have to be big [small like a pea]just be in front of where you look when you aim. Won't work for me as I have a lazy eye where one eye does all the work.Good luck with the shoulder and don't push it.

Because it has been that way all of my life. I have easily adapted to the situation. Shooting, sports and other eye related coordinated activities have been primarily mastered with one eye.

After reading Max's book , I almost went home on R&R and bought the biggest,baddest,firstest thing I came upon . Bring on the .460 ! The .475 ! .500's !!
Then I put the brakes on...had to jake brake myself to a stop . Waffled between the .45 and .44 Mag . Decided on the .44 since I don't yet reload. I think it was a wise decision , in hindsight.
I'll shoot the hell out of it and see where things go from there . In Max's book, he uses the phrase " I think this is where the fun begins ." I'll give it time to see if I share the sentiment.

Interesting how our health (and sometimes, surgeries) can really dictate what firearms we are comfortably able to shoot.
Sitting here 18 days after my second total knee replacement, I have lots of time to ponder. Luckily the knee surgeries won't really affect my firearms shooting. But one thing I do keep realizing, sometimes in a lot of pain and unable to walk without crutches, is that your health is pretty much everything. I am lucky and will heal in just a few more weeks or so, but I know that there are lots of you out there that have it far far worse; I guess I just wanted to ramble and remind us how very blessed the majority of us are.

Aaron, you chose wisely in light of the fact that you don't reload. Hard to go wrong with the .44 Magnum.
Get well, Gregg, and don't rush your recovery!

Thanks Whit!
I still have one coyote to shoot (for my taxidermist) and you can usually still get a good pelt as late as mid to late February where I hunt them (10,000 feet elev.) so we will see.
I assure you come springtime I will be ready to go after the varmints!
Aaron, as Whit says, you absolutely can not go wrong with the "little girl's gun."
