If you've never handled a FA, you owe it to yourself to at least do that before you toss the idea. They are bank vault solid/tight and opening the loading gate and feeling the action work is just a thing of beauty. They will shoot amazing groups but if you are looking for a 44, they just don't pop up used in that caliber very often. A nice used 454 for $1000-1200 would be my way to go if you get in the market for a 45 of some type down the road. You can load that one from mild to wild and its a tackdriver through all velocity ranges. Have fun with it!

The FA's are very well built but the action is over engineered which is why it can't be tuned as easily or to the feel of a properly done custom Ruger. I own both and a good custom Ruger feels much better as far as the action goes. They can be built to the same tolerances but the action is what seperates them plus if you like classic blue you can have that in a Ruger plus there are more cartridges to choose from. I am saying though there is a world of difference between a properly built custom and a so, so custom. I'm not trying to dog FA and they are the best off the shelf gun but a well built custom will make you think twice.

i've scoped every FA gun i have for accuracy testing and i have found factory loads that will all push or break the 1 moa barrier at 100 yards with factory ammo for 5 shots. all 454's as well, i'll bet my 475 coming in several months will do the same. i've never had another brand of gun break the 1 moa barrier at 100 yards yet, not saying they can't, not saying they're not out there and my son's FA 454 and 500 jrh have had groups at about 1.25" at 100 but just saying what my results have been. most accurate revolver i've ever seen was a FA 41 mag that would break 1/2" moa with the right load. all scoped equally with the same scope of course.

Keep in mind that Magnum Research uses top-shelf barrels and the way they perform their barrel to chamber alignment is as good as line boring. This is why they are so accurate. They just don't cost $2K, so people I think don't want them to be as accurate or more accurate than FAs. Just an observation.

I was/am using Pac Nor barrels and those are about as good as it gets.

Whit, i have been outspoken on the bfr accuracy and i agree with ya completely with their accuracy and have a hard time telling which is the better deal. The srh rugers or the bfr. In general the bfr is more accurate imho and i just picked up another 5.5" 454 at cabelas. Didnt know they even made them that way but its just an awesome piece. So now we have several bfrs in house and ill let ya know how our accuracy testing goes with them. So far its been top notch and they do come with a great scope base
