Colt Python shooting Winchester 158gr JHP ammo. I believe this whitetail was taken in 1983 or 84 in Pennsylvania....Its funny how Mikefrompa, who posted above, and I started handgun hunting 30 years ago, he using a 6" Security Six and I using a 6" Python, with both guns in 357mag....

8" Colt Anaconda in .44 mag shooting PMC 240 grain truncated cone soft point. Extremely accurate with a Leupold 2x. Killed deer from 30 to 75 yds. And like the genius I am, I sold that gun for more than I paid for it. Moron.

My first big game handgun was a Ruger Redhawk in 44mag. I shot a whitetail doe with it in 1981. Was more proud of that doe than I was with any elk or bucks I'd ever shot up to that time. Was hooked on handguns from then on. (Hooked on handguns) that would make a great bumper sticker.

My first hunting handgun was a Super Blackhawk 44 Mag. Got the gun, a 3-screw model, a Lee Loader, a can of 2400, Hornady 44 / 240 jsps, and CCI 350 primers, all for $185.00. This was '69. Shot the hell out of that gun, getting ready for hunting. All the "old" hands said it couldn't be done with a handgun. At 13, I knew better. In the first half-hour of hunting season, with one shot, I downed a nice 4x4 whitetail, dressed at 190#. Been hooked ever since. First small game hunting handgun, SS Ruger Single-Six convertible, 6.5" barrel. Wore it out twice, had to return to factory to be retuned, lost count of how many LR rounds. Only shot two or three boxes of mags, to costly a $3-$4 / box. 22 LRs were $0.50 / box.

Colt Woodsman .22 LR 6 inch for squirrel hunting, at 12 before I started using a .410 shotgun at 13! In 1979, at 25, handgun deer hunting started with a S&W Model 57, nickle plated, 6 inch, using Winchester Silvertip 175 grain JHP. Squirrel hunting with a .22 pistol is still second only to big game hunting with a iron sighted revolver.

When I was young (~8) my brother bought a SRH 44 mag with a 2x Leupold. I was in awe of this gun! I had never even considered hunting with a handgun. My father, until now has always considered handguns as dangerous and only for ccw usage. Fast forward to age 22 I was living in a bad area and our lease became infested with hogs. I bought my first handgun, a 3" sp101 in 357. I taught myself how to use it and could shoot the rig really well to 25yds.
We had a new member at the lease who was very new to hunting and wanted to expose his son to the outdoors the way the boy-scouts had exposed him. We welcomed him with open arms. He let his son shoot their first deer, a gut shot doe taken at about 40 yds. He asks me to help him track it, I say yes on the condition that I am the only one carrying a gun. ( inexperienced hunters + guns + 3 people in a small area + emotions = BAD THINGS) I carry the 357 to put the doe down in case she was still alive. When I found her she was very much still alive and bedded down 35 yds in front of me. I asses the location of the other two people and tell them I am going to put her down. Thinking that a 35yd shot with a relative snub nose was a relative to a hail mary at the time, I closed in. Approaching 11 yds she jumps up, entrails dragging, and begins to run to my left. I draw, thumb the hammer, center the front sight forward on her front shoulder, and break through the trigger. She drops like a hammer. You could not ask for a more perfect hit. The father, while a inexperienced hunter, had shot handguns extensively; watched the scene take place. He walks up to me slightly scared of me considering how quickly I had made my decisions and killed the animal. This was the first kill he had witnessed; we all know how that first effects us. He was absolutly shocked that I was able to shoot at that distance and at a moving target. I explained that while I may not be the best paper puncher at the range, shooting at hair is a different ball of wax.
We all exchange high 5's and keep his son excited about his first deer, and proceed to the pictures. I am more proud of helping that young man get his first deer than any deer I have claimed myself.
Son kills first deer Man watched his son kill his first deer. I finish the deer for my first handgun deer.
Lots of memories and lots of firsts that day.

A Ruger Bisley in 45 Colt.
Took a nice buck with it the first day in the woods with it. I was hooked at that point.

At first I carried my Ruger SRH exclusively. I call it my unlucky gun, never even see deer when I carry it.
After 2 years, I carried a S&W 629PP with a red dot and killed 2 deer within 10 minutes.
This year I may try to take the "unlucky" gun again.

The first handgun I hunted with was a Crossman pneumatic pellet pistol in .22 Cal. That was in the late 50's, early 60's. I and my buddies hunted in the woods on Herring Run In Baltimore where it runs down to Morgan State College. I am not proud to say it now, but back then there wasn't a bird safe if I could get within 30 feet. I learned a lot about sight alignment, holding and squeezing and handgun hunting with that Crossman. I wonder what happened to it?

First handgun I ever hunted with was a Colt SA in 22lr that belonged to my cousin.
First rimfire I owned and hunted with is the Ruger MK III
First centerfire and only handgunned deer to date was a S&W 686 in .357 Magnum.
Although I own 1 foreign made handgun (CZ75B in 9mm), my hunting rigs are all American. When it comes to wheel guns we make the best.

Mine was a Crossman CO2 pellet gun. It was the revolver that looked like a S&W. Still one of the best Christmas gifts I ever received from my parents.
I loved slipping through the woods in the snow with that gun looking for sitting rabbits. I felt like I was on top of the world when I was carrying that gun.

My first handgun was a S&W Model 29 44mag w/8 3/8''barrel. l had been shooting silhouettes with it and decided to try it on doe day.. Thanksgiving 1980 to be exact.. l had been shooting cast bullets for silh but l saw this cute little red/yellow box of Super Vels on sale and took those instead..My F I L and l were still hunting a wooded creek bottom on private property when l heard a faint rustle of leaves ot my left. l was sitting on a dove stool with my back to a gum tree when she came slipping by at about 45yds.. She looked nice and fat so l decided she was a good candidate to become hamburger and country steak. She was perfectly broadside when l squeezed the trigger. She reacted to the shot by trying to run but somehow just could not get started. As l was about to fire again she fell over. l waited a few seconds before going to her as l was not certain she was dead.. Directly l approached and noticed she was no longer breathing.. l called John (my f i l) to come and we took her back to the truck.. Back home we cleaned her.. John mostly did that..:-).. That 180 SV really did a job on her.. Severing the big bones on BOTH her front shoulders and lungs too. We had to throw away one of the shoulder because it was blood shot.. After seeing the damage to her it was quite easy why she didnt run like most lung shot deer do..l was chided by John for messing up too much meat... l countered by saying at least we didnt have to run all over the place chasing a blood trail... l really miss John and those Super Vels too..John passed away in '84...About the same time l ran out of Super Vels..and the desire to hunt deer..l took 5 deer with that little 20rd red/yellow box of 44s. Right now l am sitting on 200rds of PMC 180gr 44mags.. l hope they will be enough for me to take just one w/my new 'Hunter'
