Read about Alford Georg in an article that Layne Simpson wrote in March issue "Where have all the long range handguns gone". Good article.
I have done some asking about the book he wrote "Pioneering Handgun Hunting" and the feed back is that this issue is rare and very hard to find.
Does anyone remember the magazine that his articles where published in. Best I remember it was Outdoor Life. I enjoyed reading his articles about hunting with handguns especially the Alaskan hunts. I do remember they published that he was missing and later found his bush plane. All his firearms were missing. The magazine published the make and serial numbers of the firearms and they later caught the guy who stole them.
The issues are long gone and of course wish I had them now. Anyone remember when he pinned those articles and for sure the magazine. I was thinking he wrote them in the 60's. I did some search on the internet and really found nothing on him.

In Hunting for Handgunners by JD Jones and Larry Kelly there is a chapter on Al Georg.

IIRC the articles I remember reading were in the American Rifleman and Outdoor Life in the mid to late 60's.

Good thanks for the recollection. I see you are a 41 mag fan. Bought a 14 inch contender match grade barrel last fall to deer hunt with it. Lots of fun to shoot. Reload? What is your pet load?

Thanks Dave, I have just added the Hunting For Handgunners to my handgunning library. Will look for that chapter when it gets here.

Never heard the story on the missing handguns from the wreckage. Is that really what happened??

This is from memory, so don't take it as the gospel:
Al reportedly had several guns with him when he crashed. One of his guns turned up in a gunshop in the Pacific NW somewhere and was eventually returned to his Widow. The guy that was connected to this one recovered gun said he found the crash site and assumed everything he found was abandoned property. He reportedly denied knowledge of any other guns.

Thanks for the feed back. Been many years since I read those articles in Outdoor Life so I was hoping my memory was close on the events.

That single shot was an old rolling block if I'm not mistaken. Neat gun, maybe a Remington? I think I remember that he had issues with the Feds on that gun and they finally cleared it at some point. I may be wrong and have my guns mixed up though.

It was indeed made from a Remington Rolling Block, and he called it "Rollo".
And the correct spelling is Al Goerg

dvan, Through the years and tons of old gun magazines I have collected most of the articles by Al Goerg. I also have his two books "Pioneering Handgun Hunting" and "Pacific and Northwest Hunting". I can`t remember if you had sent me a PM a few months ago about Goerg, but send me a PM and lets see what we can do....

This is the most recent article I have found by Al Goerg. Had to buy 19 old gun mags from e-bay to find two of Goerg`s articles, one of which I already have. These old mags are not as cheap as they use to be, however, I feel Goerg was strong in making handgun hunting what it is today.

I, also, have owned his book and bought one of his shoulder holsters and some of his tools from him(I think the hollow pointer is still in my sock drawer?) I've talked with him at length on the phone. Very interesting man. His son frequents Graybeards Outdoors forum on occasion. From hunting with the Harvey Kay Chuck to mounting scopes on handguns(long before they were drilled and tapped at factory), he truly was a pioneer in our sport. Steve

There is chapter also in Gary Reeder's new book Hunting Handguns and Their Cartridges. It tells how George and his guide crashed in Alaska and looters found the plane and never reported it, just took what they could and left. A couple of his hunting handguns were recovered from the wreckage that were not found by the looters...
Reeder Custom Guns also now makes copies of Al's hunting shoulder holster and ammo carrier.
I remember reading all his articles when I was a kid...really fascinating...

Will have to check into Reeder's new book. Thanks for the post. I really enjoyed reading his articles when I was youngster as well. Wish I had the fore sight to have kept the magazines but a lot of things have went by the ways side since my youth. I finally got a hold of an issue of Hunting for Handgunners by Kelly and Jones. Good reading.

Sounds like all of this occured before I was born. I would love to see a picture of the rollo. I cut my teeth on Bob Milek articles, the first of which I found in my Sierra reloading manual. It's great reading some of these old articles from these guys. I just picked up an old copy of a 1964 Gun Digest, with articles about the new 256 Winchester and the xp-100 chambered in 221 Fireball.

I always enjoyed reading Bob Milek articles as well. I have been reading Mark Hamptons articles in the American Handgunner and enjoy reading about hunting with a handgun again. Recently subscribed to Guns & Ammo's Handgun. Will have to see what its like.

I too am facinated with Al Goerg. The only writings of his I read aee in the book Hunting For Handgunners. Bib Melik is an all-time favorite. I enjoyed his articals. He was actually the first gun writer I felt a loss for when he died. Like I lost a best friend.

Thanks for all the interest in my father's handgun hunting experiences. I am Richard, his oldest son, and spent most of my early life hunting with my father. He originally quit his job as a foreman in a plywood mill and opened a small sporting goods store in Port Angeles, Washington ,before full time field testing, writing, and hunting. He wrote for several magazines and authored 2 books. If you are fortunate enough to have a Pioneer Handgun Hunting, you should hold on to it. There were, I believe, only 500 published. All my kids and grandkids have one, as do most of the other members of his immediate family. It was mentioned that some of the handguns were found at the plane wreck site. They were all taken, but recovered when one of the looters tried to sell them in a firearm store in Seattle. My mother did want to press charges, but the feds got him for failure to report a plane crash. I don't know what the charges resulted in. Fortunately, several rolls of film were found at the site in a waterproof bag and the photos developed. He had a very successful hunt. Besides the shoulder holster and hollow pointer, he developed and patented a packboard for carrying game and also developed and a scope cover and camping candle. Thanks again for the interest.

Richard, glad to see your post. I recently purchased the "Pioneering Handgun Hunting" off of Ebay and feel as though I am the luckiest guy around (My FA didn't come with your dad's book, so maybe not the luckiest). I have read the book once and am going back through it a second time and have a very tough time putting it down. He was truly a pioneer.
I would love to have you answer a couple questions if you have time and the inclination, but I also don't want to be a bother. Let me know if you would as they all pertain to the hunts and experiences you and your father had.
Thanks for posting.

Sent you a pm with a few, but a couple for all of us. Did you ever get bit by the handgun hunting bug? I know that you accompanied your father on a hunt for bear in Alaska, do you still go up to Alaska? How did you find us on Handgun Hunter Magazine?
