Just took delivery of a 7.5-inch .454 SRH to test and after one range session, I am fairly impressed. The barrel is different on this one. There seems to be no taper to it at all. With factory Federal ammo (300 grain), I shot a 5-shot group of one-inch at 25 yards, and a 1.5-inch 5-shot group at 50 yards off the bench with an Ultradot 30 on top. So far so good. Can't wait to test it further. This picture clearly shows the difference in barrel diameter at the front of the barrel (and the different crown) -- the new SRH is on the left, and older one in Target Gray on the right. This is the 25 yard target and second cylinder of ammo I put through it.

Wish they would have left the front sight alone.
Rod, too.

I have a problem shooting accurately with a high vise front sight on my FA83. [Standard rear sight] Is that normal? Whitworth would the red dot give me the same grief? I am talking about trying different loads on paper. I always shoot better with a squared off front sight.

It's not optimal for shooting groups, but you can get used to it and when you do, you will have success -- if shooting groups is important to you. I only shoot groups when I am testing. I love red dots for hunting.

Dhom,
I recently (last year) went to dots on my FA, both gold bead and FO. I found that either dot in the notch was tough for accuracy. Now my gun uses a s&W rear sight and I switched it out to an express type rear, which is a shallow v. I shoot this setup more accurately than dot in notch. You can sort of shoot the blade sides of the dot/FO but for me it is slow and painful. Neither seem to be better than a red dot or scope, for me.

I see what your saying whit that is a big difference in barrel diameter. Does the extra weight make a difference,or is it even noticeable?

I haven't noticed it, but I've only had it for a week (and have already had three shooting sessions with it). This think just doesn't stop amazing me. 5-shots, 50 yards, 3/4-inch......

That's nothing to complain about. I like the looks of the new SRH better, but im not much of a double action fan.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Had my first real practice session with the .454 SRH this morning. I finished sighting it in, and shot off of sticks at 50 yards. Was able to knock out a 5-shot group just under 3-inches. I am happy thus far. But, more practice is needed.......

Got to stretch its legs a bit today and shot it at 100 yards off of the bench. Shot two 1 1/2-inch groups and this 1 3/4-inch group (5-shot -- same Federal load). I am thoroughly impressed with this revolver!

You got a good one thats for sure. One question, the 454 bfr I had after reloading a case a couple of times I had a hard time with the bullets jumping the crimp had a Lee factory crimp die and put a good tight crimp on them and still had the problem even with good case tension.Jacketed bullets.

Whit, did you ever find out more about the barrel and what if any other mods have been made? nice shooting. Thank you! It is the new barrel profile that is standard now, to include the new and not so pretty front sight. No other changes that I know of.

I think the NC pig population is going to shrink with that kind of shooting!

Finally sighted the SRH in after all of the load testing I have done. 2-inches high at 50 yards with the Federal 300 grain Swift A-frame load. I am very happy with the way this revolver shoots!
