hello, new here. I am wanting to buy a s&w 460xvr but not sure if I want the 10.5" 12" or 14". I am mainly gonna use this gun for hogs and deer up to 150 yds. Any help would be appreciated.

I had this gun in the Performance Center 12" version. I liked it, but I like my single shot on a Thompson Center frame even better.
Of the ones you listed, the 12" is the only one I have experience with. They will shoot lights out if you do your part.
By the way, Welcome to the sight!

My 460 is also an 8 3/8" barreled model, but if I had to choose from the three you listed, I'd take the 10.5" model. Really though, I don't think you could go wrong with either of the three.

Hey Eastex, do you have other handguns you already hunt with? There is nothing wrong with the 460, but just wondered if it is your first or if you've been at it a while already.
My first was the 460, and if I had it to do over again, I think I'd still get the 460! When ya start reloading, you'll find out that they are made for long distance, with ease! Get the right load worked up and they are amazing!

I would never need longer than the 8 3/8" barrel.

Thanks for all replies. Yes I do have a ruger redhawk 7.5" 44 that I do hunt with. The reason I was considering longer barrel was to help take some of the recoil.

longer barrel was to help take some of the recoil A brake would be more effective in that department. Remember, you have to "carry" this piece ;-)
Rod, too.

It's still easier than carrying a rifle around. Just get yourself a good bandolier holster and you'll be all set.

Concerning the bandolier holster, what does everyone recommend. I have a 8 3/8 model in layaway, and will probably be mounting a Bushnell 2-6X.
Thanks!

l just got a 10.5'' PC model.. lts huge compared to my 629 PC.. But actually balances quite well...Much better than my old 10.5'' SBH 44mag silh model of years past..The 12''PC 460 has no brake and the 14''PC is just a bit too long

Mine is the standard XVR with the 8 3/8 " bl. I don't think you need a longer bl. in my opinion. This is one heavy revolover anyway. Plenty accurate.

Are you planning on mounting optics as well? That'll make a difference when choosing a holster...

My 460 is in 8 3/8 and is more than accurate enough for me. I absolutely love it.

I have the 8 3/8 barrel with Bushnell Elite on top. Got the S&W holster for scoped xvr and so far works great. I liked the gold monogram on it. The deer see it and just fall over DRT

Hey Lindale, Gilmer here! You're just toting the gun to the stand like me I imagine. That being said I have 7 5/8" - 14" pistol barrels and the 10.5" SBH is about the longest that I can shoot offhand well. Even if you have a rest not having to pass up a shot because it can't be made from the rest is a plus.
