I have a Ruger SBHH in 44 mag. I was wondering how much of a difference is there between the two. I have a place with a lot of hogs/does that need culling year round and would rather do it with a pistol than a rifle. My SBHH has a Leupold 2-8 on it. I feel good at 100 yds, just not sure how well it will perform further out.
Is the S&W going to be that much better down range. Most of my shots from blinds are 140-180 yds.

Rod, too.

0p-l shoot both my 629 and 460 at our monthly IHMSA silh match. When it comes time to shoot those 200 meter rams they dont waste any time falling when that 460 speaks..Boom and Klang are almost one sound compared to the ''pause'' when my 629 44 hits one... Comparing a 44 to a 460 is kinda like comparing a 30-30 to a 300 Winchester Magnum...

How is the recoil on the 460? I know it has a compensator. I heard it is similar to the 44 Mag. What barrel length should I go with? 8, 10, 12 or 14. I kind of like the look of a traditional gun. Would I get that much more performance out of a 10-14 inch barrel over the standard 8 plus change?

Mine is a 10 1/2'' PC model..Compensator and weighs 83 OZ without ammo and scope..The most noticeable aspect of the 460 is the tremendous muzzle blast.. Full power loads are capable of almost 60,000 psi. Nearly double a 44mag... 0ne advantage of the 460 over a 500 is its ability to fire rounds less power and recoil like 45 Colt and 454 Casull

..paint,
Have 460s in barrel lengths from 3" to 10" in revolvers, 15" and 20" in Encores. I hunt with the 6.5" S&W PC and it has never let me down. Longest distance 200+ antelope doe.

I too would go the 460 route but the only time the recoil is like the 44mag is when shooting 45colt in it.Can't you just move your feeder or blind to stay in the hundred yard range?

How is the recoil on the 460? I know it has a compensator. I heard it is similar to the 44 Mag. I made a video comparing the recoil of the 45s, 454s, and 460s out of mine and uploaded it to the member video forum, if you want to see how much they kick relative to each other, that is. I've never shot a 44, so I can't tell you how they compare. What barrel length should I go with? 8, 10, 12 or 14. I kind of like the look of a traditional gun. Would I get that much more performance out of a 10-14 inch barrel over the standard 8 plus change? Mine's the 8 3/8" barrel model, but I wouldn't have said no to one with a longer barrel. Again, I can't say from experience how much better a longer barrel would be, but I don't think it would hurt to have the extra length if you plan on doing longer range shooting.

I just ran the ballistics information for the factory 500SW with the 300 grain FTX v.s. the factory 460 with the 200gr FTX. Inside 150 yards the 460 has a slight edge but after that the superior weight and ballistic coefficient of the 300gr bullet in the 500 make it shoot almost 4 inches higher at 300 yards with a 100 yard zero. Now this is based off the factory advertised velocities which I believe were established using the 8 3/8" barrel in both cartridges. If you go with a longer barrel you will gain some performance but have a heavier gun. As near as I can tell the only difference between the 12" and 14" 460SW is they took the 12" and threw a brake on the end and call it 14". The msrp on the 12" is higher on than the 14" for some reason, perhaps the performance center did more tinkering with it. The 500SW is available with up to a 10.5" barrel and is a performance center gun. Basically if it were me the deciding factor between the two is not based on performance since they are so close out to ranges well beyond most peoples ability with a handgun. So pick whether you want the ability to shoot 3 different cartridges in the gun, or be able to run a wider range of bullet weights. If I am mistaken on any of this someone with more experience can correct me but I spent a lot of time trying to decide between the two myself and did a lot of research. I ultimately went with the 500 since I had bullets and dies already from an encore barrel I had.

it shoot almost 4 inches higher at 300 yards with a 100 yard zero I found the same, but it still has about 40" of drop which makes that distance a bit impractical, for either. With a 150 yard zero they both run pretty even out to 250 with about 17" of drop.

I guess all I was getting at was that the 500 will run with the 460 and with heavier bullets. I just took a lot of words to say it. I have read too many ignorant comments about the 460 and what it will do compared to the 500. This being the internet you know some will take what they read as gospel without doing their own research.
