The .454 can be loaded to much higher pressures than the .480 (65k vs 48k). On paper the .454 will look more impressive because of this factor. I personally feel that muzzle energy figures are a poor way to measure lethality. Ruger's big mistake at the outset was to release the .480 with such lukewarm loads. Loaded properly, the.480 is a pretty big hammer in its own right. I wouldn't sandwich it it between the .44 and .454.
