I`am posting these recent hunt photos from Franchise (David) to give any members that are new to the sport of handgun hunting an idea of the power available them. David used his single shot 416 Barnes wildcat loaded with a 340 grain Woodleigh bullet to take this powerful animal. Nilgi, native to India, are known for being a tough critter to put down and the one David shot was an especially heavy muscled example. An exceptional nilgi bull along with some fine shootin. Congratulatios David....

Thanks for posting this James! The Nilgai Antelope is definitely my favorite of all the exotics. Nilgai Bulls are deservedly notorious for being hard to put down. Very few Nilgai are put down with one shot. 59 gr.'s of H335 & a .416 340 gr. Woodleigh Protected Point Weldcore bullet proved to be the perfect medicine. James and I had talked about waiting for a frontal shot to see what kind of penetration I could get. That was answered very quickly. I hit the bull in the crease of the neck where it met his left shoulder. The bullet was recovered just under the skin of the back of the right ham against the hock.

The internal damage was tremendous. The Woodleigh bullets are the best That I have found for use in .416 Wildcat handguns.

Nice bull David! Congratulations!
About 4.5 feet of penetration from the big Woodleigh? That's a world of hurt.

Congratulations! A fine specimen indeed.
Rod, too.

Thank y'all! As many of you know, this hunt was in the works for 2 years. I guess patience truly is a virtue. It was worth the wait though.

Questions for science:
Muzzle Velocity? Impact Velocity (est)? Distance to target?
Helps me learn. Thanks!
Great animal.

Cool. I can look up the bullet and get the BC. Then, put it in a ballistic program and get the estimated impact velocity. I'll let you know.
Thanks.

Thanks Zee! That's very cool info to know! 👍 All I can say is that for any of the guys shooting the 416 JDJ, 416-06 JDJ, or the 416/348.......the 340 gr. Woodleigh would work wonderfully

Very nice, David, I've been looking forward to arranging a Nilgai hunt on the King Ranch, where the largest breeding herd in the U.S. resides. I keep selling the largest of my handguns over the last couple of years though, but I've still got one or two that should work.

Ken, I promise you will be very pleased with your Nilgai hunt...they are odd looking antelopes, but they are a very worthy adversary. A well constructed bullet in the right place and you will have a freezer full of meat.

Thank you Junebug and Ernie! Racksmaster, you really should take a Nilgai Bull. You will not take a better game animal for the table.

Congrats! I've got a question, though. What does the 416 Barnes look like? Specifically, what parent cartridge?

It's a 45/70 case necked to .416 with the OAL specifically designed for the chamber of the Competitor Single Shot.

I'd have to measure the OAL, but the case is full length 45/70, no cutting or trimming, and it's set up to shoot 400 gr. bullets set to the bottom of the cannelure. AL from Competitor sent me 2 dummy rounds with the reloading die set. It's set up to be about 150 fps faster than the 416 JDJ

A very nice "Blue Bull" bites the dust! Well done & I see you keep fine company, old James is a fun guy to have around although he's kind of quiet, one of my favorite people! A lady over at Alpine, Wyoming said to tell him hello, actually she said to tell him a lot of things but all the others can't be repeated here!
