Recoil of the big handguns has been discussed lately, and is a pretty constant topic here anyway.
I want to share this short video that is part of my handgun hunting video. I apologize for the marketing aspect of it; that is NOT my intention here.
I hope you enjoy.

The hardest recoiling revolvers I currently own are my .500 JRH Bisley and my .500 Maximum. Fortunately the quality custom grips mitigate much of the negative effects. My .500 JRH BFR is stout as well, but to a lesser extent than the other two. That said, both of those revolvers loaded to spec pale next to my .50 Alaskan revolver- that I no longer own. That thing was a four -pound rodeo.

A cheap and easy way to somewhat reduce the felt recoil of any handgun is to just buy a shooting glove. Some "recoil" sensitivity comes from muzzle blast and adequate hearing protection can be a big help.

The heaviest recoiling round that I've shot and taken game with is a full length 458 Win Mag case necked to .411.....the gun had a laminate, center grip, wooden stock....it was one hell of an effective round, but it kicked like a Mule.

The hardest recoiling handgun I ever shot and owned was a 454. Not much I know but it still stung. I eventually got rid of it. 44 is my limit now. Have a factory break on the 30-30 barrel and it is a pleasure to shoot and accurate.
Thanks Gregg for that video.

The first time I shot my Encore 460 (no brake and off-handed) I wanted to chest bump my high school football team...from 25 years ago. Needless to say none of those guys were there. First time on the bench with it I thought about giving it away around shot #8. Gloves help as does moderation.
My filter is broken.

Worst I ever had was an old, original Contender in a short, light 44mag bbl. The other one was a FA83 in 454 Casull with a 3"bbl and no ejector rod. They call it the "Packer". It was one of the coolest little back-up guns I ever carried here in Alaska, but that thing did nothing but hurt. I've shot .500 Linebaughs on a SBH frame that didn't hurt that bad.
If it were supposed to be easy, they'd have sent my little sister to do it.

Gregg, that didn't come across as too commercial. Just an overview of what's out there to help with recoil. My FA .454 is ported and it's not bad at all to shoot. If I remember correctly the worst I ever shot was a 10" Contender in 30-30.

The hardest kicking handgun I have is my TC Encore 460 S&W Mag. I've had a lot of guys change their mind after watching me shoot it. You should see the pics of Whit shooting his 50 Alaskan and ask him about the bump on his head.

Never seen anything worse than my Kahnke .54. makes a hot load in a .454 feel like a cap gun. Over 90lbs free recoil.

A good set of grips that fit YOUR hand and a muzzle brake will tame MOST handgun recoil. But when you get into the truly big stuff say .454 and up they still hurt, and it takes lots of concentration and practice to shoot them well. Would not shoot that 50 Alaskan on a bet, think more of my hands and head than that.

When you are younger or have good hands, wrist's and elbows you can build up a tolerance to heavy recoil. As I get older and arthritis and injury take there toll I find I have considerably less tolerance to recoil. With my heavy kickers group size starts to grow after 10 or 12 rounds so I shoot something smaller for awhile.

Recoil is governed by Newtonian Mechanics. Ok, for the non-engineers out there: What goes out one end also goes out the other, equalized for the size difference between the firearm and its projectile.
Various nifty recoil functions available over the web will take care of the math, so just go with me a bit.
Faster, higher velocity but smaller projectile may have the same, on paper, recoil as slower, lower velocity but bigger projectile (bullet) and you perceive that the recoil of one is worse for you than the other even though they are the same on paper.
Higher recoil velocity stings, larger projectile smacks more. Kind of the way I perceive it, you may be and probably are different.
I think this is why 1200 fps with larger projectiles is a popular velocity for really large bore guns, works for me. I notice only slight differences in comfort between my Redhawk 45 Colt (3lbs 2oz ) and my SRH 454 (4lbs. 4oz. ): (265gr at 1200 recoil = 1.82, V= 18.74 Free Energy = 17,05) vs.(a 240gr at 1750fps recoil= 2.54, V=19.25, Free Energy = 24.46). The bullets are about the same, velocity huge change. But from a practical stand point not really that different in killing effect, mostly a factor of how far down range and ease of trajectory compensation, big issue for me.
Absolutely worse, nastiest recoil I've ever experienced, rifle; 375 Wheatherby, various way too light shotguns, prefer less than 1oz loads in 12ga. not a big water fowler...
Handgun: Ruger LCR in 357 mag with 180gr full power loads. 1,yes, one pound 4oz loaded weapon vs. a 180gr at 1100fps. Recoil = 1.11, V= 28.57 Free Energy = 15.84. NOTE the BIG difference in recoil Velocity form the other weapons I mention. Small handgrip, barely two fingers for me concentrates a lot of "sting" in a small area. Another reason grips are so very important to me, I have large hands and everyone's are different. Stings like absolute hell to me, only managed 4 out of 5 shot attempt before calling it quits. Regularly shoot 50 rounds plus of 250gr. at 1000 and 25 of 265gr and 10 to 15 at 1750fps with no problems. Prefer multiple trips to the range, 10 minutes from my house to long sections beating my hands to death, have old injuries that would be exacerbated by too much fun.
Have Fun! I know I will!

I'm helping a young man do some load development for an 8.5 pound 460 Van Horn (460 Weatherby shortened to fit a standard action). He is on his way to becoming a guide and will use it for his bear gun to back up clients or iron the wrinkles out of bad situations. From standing he handles the recoil well, as do I, but I have to say it's all I want to handle and only in limited doses. From the bench it takes a sissy bag to make it manageable.

We all have a different recoil tolerance & body size really doesn't have anything to do with it, but age can. I had one of the early FA 475's & it was a Tiger, I've also had a full house 458 Win. mag in a 14" braked Encore. I've shot one of the 500 Linebaugh's & did quite a bit of test work with the first 416 Lockhart (416 bullet & 350 magnum case) can't say any of these guns were fun, & it actually takes a lot of concentration to shoot one accurately while it's easing past your left ear! I don't care for it anymore & handing one to a new shooter should absolutely be out of the question but some people do it just for a laugh....that's not funny! Be very careful with recoil, it can be a game breaker for many & very hard to work out of. My heavy 44's, 45's & 480 is all I need now days, other guys are much tougher.

I'm in the process of testing my own recoil threshold. I should get my .44 mag 12" hunter barrel back this week after having it re-chambered to .445 Super Mag. I'm pretty sure it will test my limits just fine. Worst case is that I will load it down a bit. So far, I really enjoy shooting my next biggest, a 375 Winchester in a 14" barrel with a brake.

Abner, your project is what I've had in mind for quite awhile now. I haven't come across a hunter barrel yet at a price that interests me to keep the cost down following the rechamber. I look forward to your reports once you get things up and rolling. Who's doing the reaming for you?

Hey BT - I'm having a local gunsmith do the re-chamber. He has a good reputation locally and I have used him before. I only paid $180 for the barrel and the re-chamber is $100, so I'm still lower than I could order a new custom for. It may be a few weeks before I get everything in place, but I will be posting my progress as it comes. I'm like a kid at Christmas right now.

Sounds good. Yes, the overall cost approaches a new custom barrel, but sometimes we just want to be different. TC folks are that way.

Hey Greg, funny the first time I am on here in years and this is one of the first posts I see. I'm not building big bore revolvers anymore short of rechambering my own 480 Blackhawks to 475. The funny part is I am building another 458 Lott Encore barrel as I sold mine way back as well as the others I had built for customers. At the same time I have a project going with the 450NE, 500-450NE and the 500NE. Should be interesting to say the least. Anyways I figured those fit the title of your post. If I decide to,do,it for a,business again I will do all the big bore black powder cartridges up to 45-120 as well as the ones listed.
I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne-The Shootist

Thanks guys. I'm still kicking been a wild and rough couple of years so shooting took a back seat for a while. As you saw from my post I still have a love of all calibers large. I am considering getting my FFL back but this time just sticking with repairs and action work. Last time I got myself in a trouble when I went down and had a bunch of custom Rugers underway. Fortunately Jack Huntington helped me out. I am playing with the really big stuff right now in the Encores to see where the realistic limit is. When I was doing the 458 Lotts before they sold fast. I think it's 10% guys hunting big nasty stuff and 90% Ego. It is impressive when your at the range and one of those big buggers goes off and then you pull out a cigar sized case Anyways I will fill you guys,in more later. I will be around on a regular basis again.
