The great thing about the variables are the fact that if you don't want or need the extra magnification....just turn them down...
Yeah but what's the point in lugging around a 2-7x if you're just going to leave it on 2x? Been there, done that, don't see the point. You're also talking about single shots and my post, along with the OP, are with regards to revolvers. If I was hunting with a 300yd capable handgun, I'd probably want a variable too.
