HUNTING SEASON IS HERE AND IF YOU DO NOT TAKE PRECAUTIONS YOU MAY COME HOME WITH CHIGGERS, WHICH INHABIT MOST OF NORTH AMERICA. CAN'T SAY I HAVE EVER SEEN ONE BUT HOLY S... I KNOW I HAVE HAD THEM. AT THE RECENT JRH BOVINE BASH IN HONDO, TEXAS I SAW 1 GUY WITH ZIP TIES AROUND HIS PANT LEGS NEAR THE ANKLES, ANOTHER WAS RELYING ON STOCKINGS AND GAITERS, AND 1 HAD DR. ADAMS FLEA COLLARS IN HIS BOOT LACES, ME I HAD MY PANTS TUCKED INTO MY KNEE HIGH CHIPPEWA SNAKE PROOF BOOTS AND SPRAYED THE BOOTS WITH BUG BLOCK, LIKE A DR. ADAMS SPRAY ON STEROIDS, USED TO SPRAY HORSES FOR HORSE FLIES. BUG BLOCK, AND A SIMILAR SPRAY CALLED ULTRA SHIELD RED, ARE USUALLY AVAILABLE AT FARM AND RANCH STORES, AND KILL AND REPEL ANTS, FLIES, CHIGGERS, BEES, FLEAS, TICKS, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING (GREAT FOR KILLING DEER BLIND BEES). IT IS BEST TO TUCK YOUR PANT LEGS INTO SNAKE BOOTS, MUCK BOOTS OR THE LIKE AND SPRAY YOUR BOOTS OR SHOES AND PANT LEGS WITH ONE OF THE HORSE FLY SPRAYS, BUT NEVER SPRAY DIRECT ON YOUR SKIN!!!!! IF YOU ARE PUSHING THRU BRUSH WEAR LONG SLEEVES AND SPRAY WITH MOSQUITO REPELLENT (CHIGGERS ARE NOT JUST GROUND PESTS). IF ALL FAILS AND YOU GET CHIGGERS, THE BEST REMEDY I HAVE FOUND IS A WHITE CREAM CALLED CHIGGEREX, IT REALLY WORKS.
THIS IS WHAT I HAVE FOUND WORKS FOR ME. INTERESTED TO SEE HOW OTHERS MAY DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM.
ENJOY THE OUTDOORS, DON'T SUFFER THE CHIGGER AFTERMATH.
"ADAPT OR DIE". I USE ALL CAPS, NOT BECAUSE I AM YELLING, BUT BECAUSE IT IS AN OLD HABIT FROM MY ARMY DAYS, PLUS IT IS EASIER TO TYPE AND READ.

I buy permethrin from the farm store, mix about three table spoons to a gallon of water which is enough to last all year. Spray it on my clothes and let dry, havn't got a tick or chiggers all year.

Rey, That Texas hunt was the first for me in a few ways... 1) to hunt in 100+ degrees and 2) to be made aware of chiggers (I was the guy with the zip ties along with a liberal amount of bug spray).... I was lucky I did not experience what some have called "torture" with a weeks worth of scratching......

Down here in South Alabama they'll eat you up if you arent careful. I spray my socks first, then the boots, and even the snake leggings.
Forgot to spray a month ago and had around 20 of 'em dug in good. Not fun!!
BTW ... we call them "Red Bugs"

Wish I could have read about these prevention's and remedies last year, pre-season. I forgot to tuck in my pants when I was out scouting around, and they tore me up.
BTW ... we call them "F**CENSORED**S"

Chiggers are the Arkansas state bird.
Last batch I though I got into covered one leg from ankle to mid thigh. Turned out I had just contracted Lyme Disease. Permethrin is a go-to. OFF, Repel and a few others do well.
My filter is broken.

Growing up on a farm in the Ozarks I learned early on how to deal with chiggers. If you go through the brush at least once a week starting about the time they come out of the spring you will get a few that itch but you will build up a resistance to them, you will still have chiggers but you will not itch and they do no harm to you. Just don't go to the lake a swim for a couple of days as it seems the resistance can wash out and you will have a couple more weeks to itch before it builds up again, been through this a few times. Cortizone cream also helps.

I dislike those little bugs with the white hot burning hatred of a thousand suns.
Being from the northeast, I had no idea that chiggers were even a thing. Ticks and poison ivy is what I was taught to look out for. I was on a hog hunt down in Texas when I learned first hand that they are the devil's spawn. I crawled through about 30 yards of underbrush on my belly while stalking a nice boar. I got a case of them, a really bad case, and the itching that ensued afterwards was enough to drive a man to drink...heavily.
Sitting on an airplane later that week with my "inner thigh" fully engulfed in chigger bites. I truly don't think I have ever been that uncomfortable in my life.

We all got hit so badly last year at the JRH Holiday that we all took extra precautions this year. I sprayed my pants, socks and boots with Permethrin days before I left, and while there, I sprayed my body with Off, and then put flea collars around my legs over my socks and topped it all off with gaiters. No chiggers this year.....

Some years are worse than others here at home. I usually just tuck my pant legs in my boot tops and spray with 'Deep Woods' OFF.

I WAS UNAWARE OF PERMETHRIN. WILL CHECK TO SEE IF IT IS A LOWER COST ALTERNATIVE TO BUG BLOCK AND ULTRA SHIELD RED.

I'm just grateful that chiggers aren't as big as ticks!
