Shot my first deer with a handgun this morning. It was a very large and older doe and the shot was a little over 20 yards. I was sitting in a stand with a max seeing distance of 30 yards all around so my firearm of choice was my Springfield 1911 Range Officer. It is set up for 45 Super but I only shoot upper +P 45 ACP loads in it occasionally and practice with normal 45 ACP loads. I was shooting a home cast NOE 452-230 grain cup point and with my alloy of 50/50 WW w/2% tin and pure, it weighs in at 245 grains. Powder was 7.5 grains of Power Pistol which should be right around 950 fps muzzle velocity. It put a 1" whole in the lungs and kept on going.
