Made about a 15 mile loop on the 4 wheeler yesterday afternoon to check out one of my old grouse hunting spots. This area doesn't have much water in it but most years there are Ruff Grouse, Blues & Forest Grouse but the last couple of years we've had a bad hatch because of a wet spring & not many chicks have survived. Some friends told me they have been seeing some birds this year so I thought a little trip would be worth it, even if it was just to see some of the fall colors. This ride has quite a change in elevation, probably something like 5700 ft up to about 7,000 ft or close to it. Near the top is usually where you find the big Blue Grouse. Anyway, I got a few nice photo's but only saw one Grouse & one shot with my much used 32 maggie 7 & my favorite load of 3 grs of WST with the 100 gr SWC. On the way out I passed this sheep camp, most of these guys are from Peru, although some are Basque. I stopped & took a photo of his camp & a quarter mile away was a water tanker for the sheep. As I was pulling away I looked up on the ridge 300 yds away & 2 of those huge Great Pyrenees guard dogs were bearing down on me & running hard. I sped up a bit but these things are fast for their size, one of them almost cut me off & I had to really hit the throttle to pull away from them. I don't know if he would have bit me or if he was just curious, I didn't want to stop & find out! This is the second time in 3-4 years I've been chased by one of these big dogs, they are huge! No time for photo's, I was in a hurry! Notice the excellent Ferminator front sight! Dick

SHEEP HERDERS HAVE SOMETHING I WANT, YOUNG LAMBS, THEY TASTE JUST LIKE, CABRITOS, YOUNG GOATS. COOL LOOKING WAGONS, LOOK LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF AN OLD WESTERN.

Rey, there are many thousands of sheep that graze the mountains of south east Idaho, used to be in the hundreds of thousands! I buy a lamb every year at the county fair, love good lamb chops but they are $10 a lb in the store.

Congrats! Sounds like the dogs increased the excitement of the hunt a bit!

Nice fall colors, we're still gourd green here. Like the looks of Fermin's sight, got one coming for the .22mag.
It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

Great shooting, as always! Gorgeous scenery, too.

Sawfish, it's pretty hard to take a photo when you're doing 35 MPH down a bad road with ruts in it & 2 big dogs bearing down with "maybe" bad intentions! I was barely controlling the 4 wheeler with both hands.

Sitting on the ground last year deer hunting and had three of those dogs walking up the creek toward me. I shifted position slightly to clear a field of fire if needed and from 100 yrds they saw me, reversed there course and hauled a//. I was relieved, three determined dogs could be hard to handle at that size and they are BIG.They weren't running deer, just wandering along,so they got a free pass. There are a couple of Amish farms in the area so probably there sheep, goat, guard dogs.

Without wanting to hijack the thread, but do you in the US have a problem with feral dogs?

We were trail riding North of Kemmerer Wyoming a few years back, and road by a sheep herder with a camp wagon like that one. Our outfitter told us he came over from Spain every year. He said something that sounded like Sie as he road by on his horse. I am sure he would have talked with us for a while if he had spoke English. We were far enough back in that they piped light to the place. His dogs did not seem interested in us on horses.

Bob, a few years ago a bunch of my family was camped out north of Soda Springs, close to Palasides Reservoir & we went for a little drive one evening & drove up on one of the many, many sheep wagons in the area & the sheep herder was underneath the wagon taking a nap. All the dogs were under there with him so I backed up & took a photo, I have it somewhere. Anyway, one of those great big dogs came out & had a smaller (maybe 40 lbs) pup tied to it with a short rope. That's how the big dogs train the small dogs, they drag the living hell out of the poor things. That pup looked like a road kill.
