I have a colt saa new frontier in 45 colt and was wanting to use it for whitetail deer and wild pig hunting.....close shots (under 50yds). I've read these frames can't handle the higher pressures like a ruger or freedom arms. Any suggestions on factory or handloads? I saw a few standard pressure loads from buffalo bore that looked liked they'd work (225gr barnes at 1000fps and a 255gr keith style bullet at 950fps). Thanks

RON K: WHAT BARREL LENGTH ON THAT NF? ARE YOU SET UP FOR RELOADING, AND RELOADING FOR THE 45 COLT? DEPENDING ON THE BARREL LENGTH, IN COLT SAA REVOLVERS, 1,000fps WITH 250-260gr BULLETS IS DOABLE. PAGE 120 OF DAVE SCOVILL'S BOOK "COLT'S SINGLE ACTION ARMY - LOADING AND SHOOTING THE PEACEMAKER" HAS A GOOD CHART ON LOADS, AND "TAFFIN TESTS" ON THE INTERNET HAS GOOD INFO ON SAA LOADS. IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT COLT's SAA AND THE 45 COLT, I RECOMMEND YOU GET SCOVILL's BOOK. AT 1,000fps AND UNDER I WOULD ONLY RELY ON GOOD CAST BULLETS, AND PROBABLY NONE THAT ARE HP'ed. FOR FACTORY AMMO FOR YOUR NF 45 COLT, BUFFALO BORE MAY BE YOUR BEST BET.

For my "Light" load out of my Freedom Arms model 97 I use Underwood standard pressure 255gr Keith Style at 1000fps. This is supposed to be a standard pressure load. If you have the 7.5 inch barrel your velocity might be a little higher. They also make a 250gr XTP at 960 fps. This is if you are not reloading. If reloading the sky's the limit.

I have also found the Thornily Relative Stopping Power calculator on Beartooth Bullets ballistics page to be very reassuring in calculating the effectiveness of the big slug at slower speeds as opposed to for frequently used kinetic energy calculations. That and the shared experience of others makes me very confident with the 255gr hard cast at 1000fps.

DavT: I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THE THORNILY FORMULA SO I LOOKED IT UP, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW TO DO THE MATH ON IT BUT IT IS SUPPOSE TO BE A FORMULA SIMILAR TO THE TAYLOR TKO FORMULA, WHICH IS THE ONE I HAVE ALWAYS PREFERRED WHEN EVALUATING REVOLVER LOADS.

It's a 4 3/4" barrel. I'm setup for hand loading just never loaded pistol cartridges. Thanks for the responses.

Is the Underwood 255gr hard cast non-expanding? I know "hard casts" are made to different hardness levels.

RON K: AT 1,000fps FORGET EXPANSION, YOU DO NOT NEED IT WITH A 45 CALIBER SWC. SIXSHOT MAY HAVE A RECIPE FOR A HP THAT WILL EXPAND AT 1,000fps BUT YOU ARE USING A 4 3/4 INCH BARRELED REVOLVER, GO WITH A GOOD BULLET THAT WILL HIT HARD, MAINTAIN ITS INTEGRITY AND PENETRATE STRAIGHT.

The website for Underwood lists the hardness at 21 BHN. It is also gas checked.

RON K: SIXSHOT HAS HAD SOME EXCELLENT CAST BULLET TOPICS, MOST RECENTLY ON POWDER COATED BULLETS. I WILL RESURRECT 2 CAST BULLET TOPICS WITH A NEW POST SO YOU WILL HAVE SOME "HOME WORK", ONE IS "CAST BULLETS: HOW FAST IS TOO FAST" AND "HARDCAST BULLET INTEGRITY".

Ron, congratulations on getting ready to hunt with that fine Colt Revolver! As Rey mentioned, a 260 gr bullet from a 45 Colt at 1,000 fps doesn't need much help, it's been taking a lot of game, some much bigger than deer for a very long time. That load is easy to shoot & hard to slow down once it hits something & all of us want that exit hole on game, it makes life simple when hunting. Deer aren't hard to kill with good bullet placement & the 45 makes short work of them with or without expansion. If you want expansion your cast bullets need to be quite soft but not lead your barrel, you can do that with powder coated bullets. You can also do it with a HP'ed powder coated bullet now. I'm simply amazed how far I'm penetrating these heavier cast HP's on deer. I've only recovered one & it went almost lengthways on a fork horn muley after breaking the front shoulder on an angle. I did not expect that. I was using a 44 HP at just over 1,000 fps. I'm almost positive it would work on "most" hogs in a heavy 45 HP, the 278 gr slug, even through the shoulders. The one variable would be if you drove it too fast. I think at the 1,000 fps margin it would be outstanding. I hope Rey tries it. On big hogs, I'm not sure but deer wouldn't stand a chance. Anyone wanting to try a few, I'll send you a sample. I have red or black.....or red or black!! A gas check is not needed with PC

RON K: WHEN SIXSHOT SPEAKS, YOU NEED TO LISTEN.
SIXSHOT: WORKING ON INCREASED VELOCITY (UP FROM 880fps) LOADS FOR MY S&W 45 COLTS WITH YOUR 275gr PC'ed HP. I THINK I GOT A RECIPE THAT WILL GET ME INTO 1,050fps TERRITORY BUT ALL I WAS GETTING WAS "ERROR" READINGS ON CHRONY YESTERDAY.

I'll try the Underwood 255gr factory loaded ammunition for now. If I start hand loading, what powder, and charge, would you recommend with a beartooth 255gr? Or which hard cast bullet would you recommend?

Ron K, for us non-reloader's another source of ammo would be Reeds Ammo, ( they have a web site, easy to find with a Google search ). I had them put together a moderate +P load for my Freedom Arms model 97 that shoots a 250gr XTP at 1200fps. A 454 Casull that shoots the same bullet at 1250fps out of my FA model 83, this is a joy to shoot, very clean and both are extremely accurate. I have ordered and shot 8 boxes of the 45+P and 4 of the Casull and both have worked great. I am currently looking for a hard cast bullet that will load shorter than 1.6" for the model 97 and will have Reeds work up a load for that to shoot at about 1100fps. Prices were very reasonable. I would prefer to reload but time and space suggest otherwise.

Thanks DavT. On their website, the 280gr SWC at 800fps looks interesting.

Any idea which of these would penetrate the deepest? Underwood?s factory loads (both between 960-1000fps advertised): 250gr FMJ-FN or the 255gr Keith-style (21 hardness)?

I shoot both but have never shot a critter with either but I would load up the 255gr Keith style for hunting deer sized game. I use the FMJ for plinking and the indoor range where they restrict all cast bullets.

DavT, that brings up a question I keep forgetting to ask, do the indoor shooting ranges allow powder coated cast bullets? The reason indoor ranges don't allow them, at least back when I shot some indoor competition was the smoke from the lube. Powder coated bullets don't have that problem. Thanks,
Dick

That I do not know but I will ask. The reason give for not allowing cast bullets is the worry about lead fragments in the air after impact. This would be unlikely with a hard cast but the range officials cannot monitor it that closely. I do shoot cast but limit it to the outdoor ranges.

lts sad some people feel the 45Colt original 250gr@850fps ballistics
is so anemic and inadequate.. Those same numbers were sufficient
to penetrate a horse @ 100yds and kill an lndian on the other side.
Those were the US ARMY ballistic requirements when the 45Colt was
introduced in 1873.. l guess todays horses and lndians are a bit
bigger/fatter than in 1873

Could be too they stopped riding on blankets and are now using saddles. Saddles might be more difficult to shoot thru,,,,

Dick THIS !!!! FYI... Ashley Emerson shot a 280LB hog in the leg with a hard cast running 1000FPS and it just kept on going. It broke the bone and the leg was dangling. He emptied his gun onto the hog as it was climbing up an embankment. (Keep in mind the hog was moving the whole time) It took all six rounds to finally shut the Hog down. Shot placement still reigns king. Ashley makes some good ammo. The 260 gr he makes is good for Deer for sure and I would not hesitate to use it on a smaller Hog. For the folks that own FA97s Good news,,, the 260 gr fits in the cylinder. I have a HP that I want to try soon if given the opportunity. This has been addressed many times by the handgun hunters but ammo folks do not always listen. Bottom line is money or economics,,,, Nosler quit making their hunting bullets simply because they did NOT sell enough of them. So getting someone to manufacturer a lot of hunting ammo is out of the question for bigger companies. Oops sort of Highjacking, Let me get off the soap box.

I have literally lost count of kills with cast bullets in the 240 to 260 weight range at velocities from 800 to 1000 in the 45 Colt and the 44 Special. It just works. Shot placement and open the tailgate. I stopped a charging hog with a 240 gr cast bullet going under 900fps from a Charter bull-dog.

IN DEFERENCE TO THE ORIGINAL 45 COLT STYLE BULLET, I USE A LOT OF OTBC 250gr RNFP BULLETS BUT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MY STRONGER RUGER REVOLVERS TO PUSH 'EM FASTER AND AM SETTLING ON A LOAD OF 21.5grs OF VV-N110 POWDER, FEDERAL 155M PRIMERS, AND "TOP BRASS" BRASS, FOR A HIGH 1,200's fps LOAD IN 5 1/2 INCH RUGERS.
AT ONE TIME "TOP BRASS" MADE BRASS AND I BOUGHT, I THINK, A 1,000 CASES. HAVE USED LESS THAN HALF OF THEM, AND HAVE RELOADED THEM MANY, MANY TIMES, VERY GOOD BRASS.
I ALSO HAD A TRAIL BOSS LOAD FOR THE 250gr OTBC RNFP THAT WOULD DO MID 800's IN A 4 INCH S&W MOUNTAIN GUN. AM GOING TO RECHRONO THE LOADS. THEY ALSO SHOT VERY WELL IN COLT SAA's AND A 1909 COLT NEW SERVICE.

FOR 2 YEARS (LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR) I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO WORK UP 45 COLT HUNTING LOADS FOR S&W REVOLVERS, SPECIFICALLY A 6.5 INCH 625 POWER PORT, USING VV-N110 POWDER AND 250 - 275gr BULLETS. AFTER YESTERDAY's RANGE WORK WITH THE POWER PORT I HAVE DECIDED THAT I MAY HAVE BEEN ON A FOOL's ERRAND, GOING TO TRY HS-6 NEXT. ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A HS-6 LOAD? FOR THE S&W's I HAVE SEEN SOME 12 OR SO GRAIN RECOMMENDATIONS, BUT NOT ANY AT 13grs??????????
VVN-110 NEEDS MORE POWDER OR HEAVIER BULLETS THAN WHAT I WAS USING. 20grs VV-N110, FED 155M PRIMER, STARLINE CASES, AND A 275gr CAST SWC PC'ed HP, MAY BE OK, BUT SAME LOAD WITH 255gr SWC's WAS NOT. GO TO 21.5 - 22.0grs AND VV-N110 SHINES, BUT THESE ARE RUGER LOADS, NOT FOR S&W.

45Man - 13.0 grains HS6, Winchester cases, Sierra 240gr JHC, and Fed 155 primers. This is my go to/one and only load at the moment for my S&W 625 6.5 inch Power Port guns. I have two of them, one with a 2X B&L scope, and the other with a green fiber optic frt sight. This load is from John Linebaugh's site I believe, and he recommends it highly. It is very accurate in my guns, and I have taken a turkey with it thus far. Not certain if you know it, but these guns have a really good value. Have seen two of them sell for well over a grand on Gunbroker.com. The one thing I would like to mention is that when I did my load work up, i originally started with Fed 150 primers and was disappointed with the accuracy. Switched to the Fed 155's and viola, the groups tightened up alot. Velocity from my guns is about 985 fps depending on the temp. I have substituted Nosler 250 grain JHP's, but they weren't as accurate. They did prove accurate in my EMF Hartford rifle producing almost 1300 fps. I used this gun and load to take another turkey this past season. They don't run or fly away. Haven't tried it with cast, but would probably pick up close to 100 fps.

M8: SUPPOSEDLY ONLY 308 625 POWER PORTS WERE MADE. I ALSO HAVE A 2X B&L ON MINE. I DID REAL GOOD AT THE RANGE THIS MORNING WITH THE 275gr SWC PC'ed HP OBVER 20grs OF VV-N110, EASILY HITTING AN 8 INCH SPINNER @ 65 YARDS AND GIVING IT A GOOD SPINNING WITH THE HITS. TAKING IT TO THE HIGHPOINT TOMORROW, HOPE TO USE IT ON A HOG OR AN AOUDAD EWE.
SORT OF OFF TOPIC NOW TALKING S&W HUNTING LOADS BUT A NEW FRONTIER AND A S&W ARE CLOSE IN WHAT YOU CAN REASONABLY REGULARLY SHOOT IN THEM.

l think the 45COLT case is too big for magnum loads in a S&W revolver.
l use 45Schofield cases in my Smiths, 625 Mtn Gun and a 25-3..
Case capacity is very similar to 44Spcl..
ps.. There's an even better case for Smiths and old Colts.
Called 45Cowboy, exact same capacity as 45ACP and Auto Rim.
Case rim thickness is same as 45Colt and Schofield. 45Cowboy was
developed by SASS cowboy shooters

45Man - Keep us posted on the performance of your loads on game. Brian Pearce of Handloader did an article on loads for the S&W 625's using the logic that the 45ACP revolvers are capable of using +P loads at about 23K PSI, and applied that to the 45 Colts. I have a copy of it somewhere, but the data is probably available on Loaddata.com if you're a subscriber. I was going to try the 13.0 grain load using Hornady 250gr XTP's, but I felt they were a little harder and probably wouldn't expand at impact velocities at 50 yards or more. Power Pistol is supposed to be another good powder yielding above average velocity for the 23K PSI limit. I believe you're right about the New Frontier and it's limitations. I wouldn't push a pretty gun like that much more.

l want to point out that's pretty common knowledge S&W MAGNUM
frame revolvers are ''Heat Treated''.. The frames for NON magnums
are NOT heat treated

So, knowing that, do you think it would be a worth while gain to take a S&W 44 magnum & rechamber the cylinder to 45 Colt & of course re bore or re barrel?

Would a HP, like a barnes 225 or 250gr at 900-1000fps, kill "quicker" than a 255gr hard cast around the same velocity? Just wondering which to use, factory loads for now, if they shoot accurate enough 25-50yds?

Just wondering which to use, factory loads for now, if they shoot accurate enough 25-50yds? If you're adamant about 900-1000fps,I'd say use the 255 cast. The XPB will kill "quicker", but it would need more velocity IMO to work properly. Otherwise, it may just perform like a FMJ.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

RON K: NEVER ASSUME THAT A GIVEN HOLLOW POINT WILL OPEN UP AND FORM A BEAUTIFUL MUSHROOM, TOO OFTEN THEY FAIL MISERABLY, AND USUALLY REQUIRE GOOD VELOCITY TO OPEN UP. FORGET JACKETED BULLETS, AT 900 - 1,000fps A GOOD CAST BULLET IS THE WAY TO GO.
