That will work! What bullet are you using in the 6.5x284?
I have had to shoot several hundred deer in fields where there are some really long shots. I use a .264 Win Mag rifle with 120gr Ballistic Tip "Hunting" bullets. Out of hundreds of kills even over 600 yards I only remember 2 deer ever running and they didn't go far. You might give that bullet a whirl.
