Last fall I decided to only use handguns for coyotes, and after a very uneventful winter, I finally had the opportunity twice this week. Both were taken at approximately 130-145 yards. One with TC Encore 7-08 with 120gr VMax, the other with TC Contender in 223 with 53gr Sierra HP. What fun! May be a long time before I use a rifle again.

That’s awesome. Ive only killed one by target of opportunity. Tried a very few times with calls unsuccessfully, although one in our group took one with a rifle. My son in laws calls n kills frequently. Reckon im too lazy n gettin old. Havnt went with him yet.

I have only made One Handgun Kill on a Coyote, and that was with a 17 Remington Contender. I was not impressed with the 17 Remington's performance at all. Most all of my opportunities on Coyotes have been while on stand deer hunting, and I let them all go on by. Good Shooting by the way.

I don’t have many opportunities at deer, so I hunt Coyotes all year long to maybe help the deer.
I spend more time just enjoying the outdoors than actually shooting, lol.

I've only managed a single coyote handgun kill, and that was an incidental encounter while deer hunting. Shot at a second one, but missed it because I didn't clear the muzzle from the hay bale I was hiding behind. For the purposes of trying to eliminate particularly problematic coyotes, I'm perfectly fine with using an AR-15 to hunt with, but I have been attempting to use my 327 Encore the past few times I've gone. Haven't managed anything yet, though, not in the least because I've had next to no free time since February.

Nice job , you did the entire hunting family a huge favor. Keep up the good work! My goal when I retired was to spend my "Golden Years" hunting/shooting Woodchucks. Well the coyotes put an end to that plan.

My next goal is to harvest one with my Super Blackhawk. We’ll see how well this goes. I don’t call them, I prefer to ambush them.

Sorry to hear about the groundhogs; I grew up hunting them in N central PA and southern NY.

I'll bet that first one died quick. Good shot placement.

They both dropped on the spot. The 2nd one was with the 223 so you can’t see the entry, but it was quite similar to the 1st one.

Coyotes are targets of opportunity for me. I hardly ever pass one up unless it shows up at the same time as the intended animal that I am really hunting. I just cant lay off of them. I used to spot and stalk and called fox and coyotes back in the 90's. only used a contender during that time frame -killed a bunch. they are certainly worthy adversaries if you are hunting them on purpose.

Nice shooting and an interesting thread. I don't have an Encore but I like what I'm seeing from your .223 Contender.
I don't usually hunt predators but have decided to take it up this year in hopes of helping the turkey populations. Deer around her seem to be ok in that regard.
Not sure what creature is having the most impact but I'm thinking every little bit will help.

I've dabbled in Coyote hunting off and on over the years. I had some beginners luck in my first time out recently and called in a nice female. A 50gn Vmax from my 14" 223 contender did the job very well at a bit over 100 yards. There's a pic lost on the bragging board.

I really like the 233 Contender, but I took the Encore because it is not as wind sensitive as the 223. That day wind gusts were up to 20 and the 7-08 did well. The second one with the 223 was a normal 10mph day so it worked well.
I’ve hunted coyotes for quite a while but it has always been with a rifle. This year I decided no more rifle, and now, it may never be rifle again. This was much more satisfying and exciting.

In havent shot a rifle for hunting now for years- i defaulted to a rifle 2 years ago on a cow elk hunt to fill the freezer. going home empty was not an option. 200 yard shot was going to be at the outter limits for my 375 win so the 308 came into play. fixed that problem with a 7-08 striker and a 358 win barrel for it. rifles are now in mothballs.

How do you like that Striker? I have contemplated one maybe in 22-250 or 243.

accuracy is good with groups around 1/2-3/4" with my 7-08 handloads. In general i like it. it has done everything I have asked of it out to 300 so far. like any striker owner i would like a better trigger but i can live with it the way it is.

The first coyote I ever killed is the only one I ever killed with a handgun. I didn’t own a center fire rifle at the time but I did own an S&W Model 53 .22 RemJet. It was my constant companion when I was 16/20 years old and I could shoot it. I called him in with a hand call and he must have smelled me because he looked suspicious and drifted off at an angle. He was under a hill so when I got out of sight I stood up and crept to the edge of the hill. He saw me, took off running and I started shooting. Two shots, two misses, and the third shot caught him in the back as he slowed to go under a fence. At that time we had very few coyotes in East Texas, that was probably only the second or third one I had ever seen.

I’ve got two that stick in my mind. First one was several years ago with a Reeder 475 Linebaugh. Knocked him down running broadside at 115yds. The other was a week ago I shot one between 60-70 yds with my SBH in 44. Both guns wore iron sights.
I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne-The Shootist
