I have both, a .444 Marlin in a Win 94 Bigbore, and a 45-70 in a Ruger No.1.

The 45-70 in a modern rifle (like the Encore) continues where the .444 Marlin stops, in that it can shoot a heavier bullet than the .444.

I would say it depends on the game hunted and the bullets used. For say Deer sized animals, there would be no difference, but if used on larger game such as elk, moose or bears, the 45-70 wins hands down.

The effective range due to trajectory is simular for both rounds.
