Gotta order some stuff from Midway & thinking about trying the 400gr Lee Mold for my 480. I've had good luck with Lee molds before so I'm wondering what anyone thinks of this one specifically. It will be for moose/bear & plinking. Kinda worried about the no GC aspect, but at 1300fps is that going to matter? Anyone use the Alox type tumble lubes on normal bullets like these?

Vance,
I've used the mold in both the 480 and 475 Linebaugh with great results. Sized 0.477 for the Rugers and 0.476 for the FA83s.

Thanks Doc. I was placing a Midway order earlier so I had them throw one in. Sounds like a good choice!

The crimp groove is a little shallow for heavy loads but for 90% of the work it has a excellent reputation...

Hello
I am not sure about the Lee molds and the 400 Grain 475 but I do have a Mountain Mold that drops a 435 Grain WFNPB That Dan made for me that has a very nice crimp groove . I use 19 Grains of H110 Vel of 1178 , That is a John Taffin load seems to work good and no leading .
Unlike your experience with Lee mine has all been , well not so good .Maybe I do not know how to use them ??? I have bought from the shelf lees and had custom Lees made and all of them went to Ebay for another life .
Let me know how the 400 Grain works for you . Enjoy your new revolver .

RR,
I used Lee molds for the last 40+ years. It is true they don't cast like a steel mold; however, experience has taught me that if I follow Lee's directions to the letter, and not "my" way, the molds work great. Dan at Mountain molds has made a bunch of molds for me in the past and his products and service are top notch!

Doc I am sure you are correct . I did not spend much time with any one mold to work out the bugs . Yep my shelf's are full of Mountain Molds from Dqan. He does great work .

How do the brass ones do? Are they pretty similar to using the iron?
Thanks

The iron are best for durability although I have some brass ones that are used a lot and look new so I would say they work about the same.
