Not sure if I should post this here, but here it is...... The fluting wasn't my idea but despite the "Buck Rodgers" look, has grown on me completely. It has taken considerable weight out of the gun (the idea was to make it as small and light as possible to carry as back-up but with the option of using it as a primary hunting tool), and I can honestly say that the recoil is brutal -- and I love it! It's an SRH that started life as a .454 Casull (that I have had since 2000), but has been offered as a sacrifice to the big-bore gods. Jack Huntington built it and it features a 5-shot cylinder and a 5-inch fluted barrel. The butter-smooth SA trigger breaks at a crisp 2-lbs 6-oz, and Hogue Tamers do their level best at taming. I haven't put it on a scale yet, but it seems to be a tad lighter than my 6-inch Model 29........ My .475 SRH offers no maiden's caress in the recoil department, but this one exceeds it quite handily -- and DA revolvers tend to abuse the shooter more than their SA cousins all things being equal. So, it lets you know every time you touch it off. I am playing with front sight blade heights now to dial it in. I intend to blood it soon......will keep you posted.

That is very, very nice! The flutes look good. Is that a new barrel or was it rebored? You should have asked Jack to silver solder a Freedom Arms front sight base on it.
I like Huntingtons work. He did a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag for me.

I like Huntingtons work. He did a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag for me. I like the Ruger front sight -- it's brawny enough to fit the look of the gun. It is a new barrel that was actually turned down a bit. Thanks for the compliments!

well....i can say that is one sharp looking gun and the fluting makes it look awesome....but that is where my interest ends. i want nothing to do with brutal recoil. your hands and wrists may not either after a while.

Unfortunately, that is the price we pay for upper-end loads..... I try to shoot my big kickers smartly in that I never shoot them from awkward angles where you can cause damage. I limit my time on the bench, and I try to always use the support of my two hands.......

That is a sweet looking piece. Yeah, like you said a little "Bucj Rogers", but I like it anyway. Would make a great brown bear gun!

Whit,
Great looking gun. I had Jack build two 500 JRHs for me, one on an FA 83 and the other on a Ruger Redhawk. I've been attempting to get a hold of Jack, but have been unable to for the last year or so. He was presumably going to retire and was headed to a hunt in Mexico at the time. Could you PM me with Jack's contact info?

Well, I managed to weigh (on a digital scale in our mailroom) the .500 alongside my 6-inch M29 -- the S&W came in at 2.96-lbs, and the SRH came in at 2.94-lbs -- explains the recoil!

Very nice and it looks like it was worth the wait. That's lighter than I figured, was that loaded or unloaded? The two I've built for my self on Blackhawk frames come in at 3.12 on the 9" and the 3" comes in at 2.8 and that one is the Vaquero and it's not alot of fun to shoot but it will stop anything that walks or crawls on this planet at close range. Those were both weighed empty, loaded I add 8 1/4 ounces taking the 9" to just under 4lbs and it's pretty comfortable to shoot with the modified Bisley grip but the Vaquero you really don't even feel like your in control of during recoil.
I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne-The Shootist

That was unloaded, Rod. It's lively when you touch it off, but I find DA revolvers less pleasant on the anatomy of the shooter than SAs anyhow.

Whitworth: "It's lively when you touch it off"
I BET IT IS LIVELY!!
My Freedom Arms 83 4 3/4" in .500 Wyoming Express weighs 46 ounces empty and 56 ounces with a cylinderful of five Cast 440 grain WFNGC's. I would describe it as also lively. To see lively in action in slow motion, go to http://www.hunterseyevideo.com/products and scroll to bottom and watch the trailer all the way through to the "Random Ricochets" part...
