Yesterday while buying my wife a new revolver I saw a slightly used 30-06 Encore. Before I buy it I am looking for any feedback on that caliber in the pistol format. Also what load works best in your gun. Thanks in advance. Rick

I just looked at my Lyman book. It has an Encore listed with a 15in barrel. Subtract 300fps from your rifle data and you will be VERY close...

Hodgdon also has .30-06 Handgun Data on their web site. They don't list the barrel length but I would guess it is 15". I haven't shot a .30-06 Handgun but have worked with a buddies .284 Winchester 15" Encore. We ended up using a load I got from Ernie that pushes a 140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip to 2665 FPS from the 15" Barrel with H-4831SC. 3/4" groups are the norm with this barrel / load. I did use it to take a 4x4 Whitetail Buck a few years back with a single shot through the lungs at 150ish yards. Again I have not shot a .30-06 Encore but I am thinking it would produce about the same results as the .284 Encore since the case capacity is very close. Larry

FWIW, I am shooting ½ in groups at 100 yards with Varget and a 150 SST at 3000 FPS out of two different rifles. That should give you 2700fps with a 150gr projectile.
If you hit the “print” option on Hodgdon’s websight another page will come up. This is were the details about the firearm being used is disclosed. You don’t have to print it to look at the info. Just click button and then cancel the print job. LOL

Those are some very nice critters there Gregg.
TC Man I guess I had never hit the print option on that site and didn't know all the info was there. Thanks for the tip.

What happened to the other replies to this post? I thought they were relevant to the subject.

Rick, for whitetails i use the hornady 130 gr. sp # 3020 in my 30-06 encore with IMR 4895, moderate recoil and hammers them just fine.

Thanks for the information. The gun shop was not open today even though they said they would be. Looking forward to getting it and starting to shoot it.

In the short barrel of a handgun You will be better off using the faster powders listed for the 06 as it will burn more in the short tube. with the lighter bullets you will not see much of a diffrance between the 308 and the 06 but with the heavy bullets you will be better off with the 06. The heavy bullets let the powder burn a little longer giveing more speed.
If you are reloading for the 06 then you will be better off getting the 06 barrels but if not the 308 would be a better bet

I picked it up yesterday. I have the equipment to reload for the '06 and since I have one in long barrel form it worked for me.

Rick there really isn't much difference between the 30-06 and the 308, the 308 was the answer for the short action. You can download the 30-06 I shoot a Bullberry 308 15" Encore with 150 grain bullets. It's a 1" shooter at 100 yards and less at 50. Your 06 should shoot real good. Good Luck. Hi Rickp Lou

I picked it up yesterday. I have the equipment to reload for the '06 and since I have one in long barrel form it worked for me. FWIW I would use the same powders that you would use for rifle length barrel. H-4350 would be a good powder for 150's and 165's. As an example I use several 6.5-284's (like a 30-06 necked down to 6.5). For 140 and 130 grain loads I use H-4350. In my 6-284 I use H-4831sc with 107 & 115 grain bullets. In my WSM's and SAUM's H-1000 In my 7mm Dakota and 338 Lapua Improved I use Retumbo. All of these chamberings run from 15" to just under 18" barrels.

Greg, are you using the same load for all the different game you shoot or different loads for deer ,elk,...? I like the 165 grain Partition or Accubond, for deer and elk. I have also used the 180 Partitions on a few elk. I have never tried any lighter bullets in my 30-06 JDJ and don't plan to as I see no reason for it. I have also tried 200 grain Partitions but not killed anything with them.
