I'm looking to purchase a revolver to hunt boars. I'm looking at the Ruger GP100 Model 1707 and the S&W Model 686. Any suggestions? Recommendations?

Magnum Reasearch BFR or Ruger SBH. Its what I own so I'm bias. But I love them both. I hunt hogs 12 months out of the year and between the 44 mag and the 480/475 Linebaugh I dont expect to run into anything I cant handle.

Welcome Stacky! IMO... either 357 handgun will do,but if you run into something a little bigger I would want a larger caliber gun like a 44 mag. Both are well made but if I had the extra cash to spend I would go with the Smith. I believe the Smith is a very quality handgun. I have a 629 Classic and the 460 XVR. They have fantastic triggers from the factory and the fit and finish is excellent. I guess I could be a little bias.

The .357 will certainly work if loaded correctly and if you do your part, but I prefer a bit more diameter. I too hunt hogs year round and I use a variety of calibers on them, but you can't go wrong with a .44.

I have Smiths and Rugers in 357, 41, 44, 45---pick one. Any of them will do the job with the right loads. Don't fret too much when you're looking at two high quality brands. If you don't like single action loadin or unloading, go with the Smith. I can guarantee you the piggies won't know the difference!

I vote for the 686 get a plus gun it gives you one more round over the Ruger--Bit easier to mount a scope on the S&W too.
However the Ruger is the better buy I think you get the most for your money with it.
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

If it's just to hunt with I like the SA Ruger's. These three are great buys for the money. http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=110331I think the 357 would be fine but I would take the 45 Colt (if you reload) or the 44 (If you don't). Both can be shot with ammo that rivals 357 recoil, and will still do in a hog. I don't own any Smith's but I constantly hear how much better the trigger's are. I like that Ruger's tend to be nicely overbuilt. I'm still a rookie so take my advice accordingly. However you chose, welcome to handgun hunting.

Magnum Reasearch BFR or Ruger SBH. You can't argue with a Super Black Hawk.

Thanks for the recommendations Mike. I was looking at the 686 on Sunday, and I will have an opprotunity this weekend to shoot one with a 6" barrel.
Thanks again.

For what its worth I have a 686 and have shot a GP100 a bunch (father in law has one) and they both are fine revolvers. I have to agree with folks that recommend a larger caliber like a 44 mag but the 357 mag will do a fine job with good shot placement and it is a pleasure to shoot and reload for. A single action blackhawk (especially if you could come up with a 357 Maximum) would make a great gun if you aren't set on a double action.
