Looking at a 45acp Millenium Pro with a 3.25 inch barrel that holds 10+1.
Would this be ok in blackie or couger country??
I carry my 44SBH now, but was thinking of picking this up because it is soooo small and light, and it probly won't get used anyway.
I know I would be able to get off more rounds with this than my 44 in a defensive situation, but the 230grn bullets will be around 800fps out of that short barrel.
Is that enough??
Thanks guys, help me with this purchase!

Stoke it up with some Buff Bore or D-Tap and it may be adequate.
Rod, too.

It doesn't take much to kill a cougar, black bears depend on size. 45 acp is adequet for either one with the loads mentioned above. I have seen one bear shot out of a tree with a 45 acp, did the job.

OK Thanks.
At 22oz you would forget the gun is even there, but with 11rounds of 45 it packs a punch! I think i'll get it.

That should do the job. If you were to go with the Glock 10mm with hot hardcast that would be a tad better yet(in my opinion).

10mm would be better, but the Mill Pro is so small and light. Also a lot easier on the wallet.
Just noticed that buffalobore has some +p 255grn loads at 960fps out of a 5 inch 1911. I figure that should equal a little better than 800 out of the 3.25 inch barrel.
45cal 255grn hardcast at 800+ should be pretty good defence right?
I'm not being sarcastic, I really don't know.
Thanks MN

The one thing that may put a wrinkle in your plans is whether it would be legal. The 45 ACP is not permissible for big game hunting in MN, whether that applies to backup for bowhunting you will need to check out. And we have some idiotic requirement that bullets be expanding types, can't figger that one out.

That load should do the job on black bear or cats if well placed. I have no clue as to your local laws. When I lived in Oregon it was ileagle to have a firearm in your possession while bowhunting. Her in Alaska if you bowhunt without a handgun on your belt folks look at you strange. I carry one of two 4&5/8" BHs. One is 41 mag, the other 45 Colt(#1 choice), both loaded with heavy for caliber (255 for the 41 & 330 for 45) hardcast.

Have you looked at the S&W 329PD 44mag, more money but alot more power and I believe the same weight. I read an article a while back on a NJ cop that went on a cat hunt in ID and wanted to use his duty weapon which was a Glock in 40S&W. Things went very wrong as the shot was off it's mark and the guide had to kill the cat before it killed his dogs. The 40 didn't have enough oomph to slow the cat down and as was mentioned earlier they aren't the toughest critters in the woods. There are also an infinite number of ultra light 357 revolvers that would also fit the bill and although smaller than my personal preference it's a big step up from the 45ACP. You gotta go with what you like but fact is auto's jam alot more than revolvers and you don't want to have to clear a stove pipe while something with teeth and claws is coming for you. Just my 2 cents worth.

Not a bad idea either but I'd look for a used 1911 for that one. You want me to put one in yours while I have it bet your wife would love you for that the first time she touched it off.

Charging cougar or blackie + failure to feed + tap-rack-bang = a change of underwear at the very least. Very possibly a lot of scars and a bad hunting story to tell. Rod said it best. Smith 329 or ultralite 357. As a side note...Clint Smith is fond of saying "A sidearm isnt supposed to be comfortable. Its supposed to be comforting."

As an interesting side note, a local commercial ammo loader & I were having a conversation in his shop & he was getting on me about carrying my 10mm auto for bear protection, not because of caliber, but "reliability". Said he would never carry an auto for bear protection for that reason. I said to each his own. 15 minutes later he's telling me he's gonna be headed to the shot show soon & Vegas is a scary town &lots of chance of a guy running into trouble there so he will definetly be packing his 1911. Huh??? It's not dependable enough for the woods but is for a high crime city where you intend to spend time in the less "classy" parts of town in persute of entertainment?

minnesotahunter, there ain't nothing wrong with what you already carry.Might try a few different holsters that may make the sbh more comfortable for you.The difference between a good comfortable holster and a not so comfortable one is night and day.

Ya I'm with you on that one vance! Makes no sense at all. I shoot competition with my 1911(USPSA) and in over 15k rounds through my 1911, the only problem I had was a failed claw extractor. I replace mine now on a regular 5k round interval!

A bear is usually very easy to kill and or run off, a wounded or moma bear w/cubs is a different story. I've been charged several times on my 20 bear hunts, but as I waited 'em out, they turned out to be false charges, the bear turning away at a few yards away. I carry, my CHL< gun model 64 SW .357 with belt attaching grips, w/3" barrel. You don't want to be over burdened by weight or a hard to access pistol in such situation.

Well thanks guys. I did get it. Rowland conversion would be my 1st choice, but too spendy right now.
We will see how accurate, and reliable it is. Sure is small and light. Should carry like a dream. I don't know how they can fit 11 rounds of 45 in there, buy they can. I'll give a range report when I get a chance to shoot it.
Thanks MN

not sure yet on this year but 2010 big game you couldn't carry a handgun if you were bowhunting for deer. Makes no sense to me, less than 100 miles from canada, plenty of big black bears that have never seen a human. a real bad population explosion of timbers, an ocasional cat sighting and lets not leave out the dummies running meth labs! came across one about 4 years ago, good thing nobody was home cause all 3 of us were packin! had to drive 20 miles back and up a logging road to get to high ground so we could call sheriff, not much shed hunting got done that day. i carry a sp101 .357 5 shot for critters but i guess if there's a chance there going to shoot back i would want something with "alot" more than 5 shots on hand.

I preffer a short barreled DA revolver for a gun that is just in case. I think single actions are better as a primary, but while bow hunting, or sleeping in a tent, or just packing meat I always have my "mistress' in a modified shoulder rig. A shortened .45 Colt Ruger Redhawk, much like the SRH Alaskans are now. With a 317 grain hard cast (and the Redhawk has a longer cylinder than some guns) I can shoot THRU any bear long ways, short waysthru shoulders, whatever. This is a gun, I hope I never have to use, because with the 3" barrel, and short sight radius, its a lousy hunting rig. It just fits my hand, and has the power. I sleep very well knowing I can grab it left or right handed, stick it in the belly of the beast that decided to grab me by the leg and haul me out of my tent in the middle of the night. An auto can jam, or get debris in the works and foul it where a sturdy DA revolver can get dropped in the crud, and will go bang when you pull the trigger.......... just my .02 cents worth. dont leave home without it!

Thanks for the tip Blondie.
I had heard that also about the CC rule this year. I need to get mine, cause I feel a lot better sneaking through the pitch black woods with something more than my bow!!

i've got a 2" alaskan in 454 that i've got some great loads for, have a 4 3/4" FA 454 and a 4" 454 colt ruger redhawk. the alaskan is the most portable and quickest pointing, but the FA has a fiber optic sight which would be vastly more appropriate for dark/lowlight conditions. i love all 3

heres a couple not so good shots of the redhawk. Its got an overtravel screw, and has been totally worked so the single or double is smoooooooth. It also has a super crown job. very short and very handy for up close. I find the pacmyer grippers fit me best with a ruger.
