Ok...for weeks now Ive had this itch to get a Super Redhawk in .44 Mag. and its drivin me nuts. Due to recent financial setbacks...buying one is out of the question. So, that leaves trade as the only option to try to soothe this itch. My only trade item worth puttin up is one of my Contenders and an extra barrel with dies, or maybe two. But, I'll be darned if I can decide to pull the trigger or not. I guess Im just worried about not being happy with a SRH since I have never had one before, and I dont know of anyone who owns one that I could check out. None of the gun shops in the area have any in stock to inspect either. Does anyone have any feedback for reasons NOT to get a SRH? Im definately not recoil sensitive and love to roll my own ammo. I think a SRH would be a nice addition to the stable, but just cant seem to make up my mind on this one for some reason.

Just wait do not sell the Contender unless you just do not like it -- you will be sorry later
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

tenderfan,
The Super Redhawk is a great gun. Strong enough to handle anything you would care to shoot in it! Also, if you have the "itch" and roll your own - consider the SRH in 480 Ruger. Sorry to "bugger up" the decision process. What Contender / barrel / die combo are you considering for trade, if I may ask? I have several SRH and love'm all. Also consider what your purpose is for the gun: fun, hunting ( what game ), etc..

Well Doc...I have yet to really decide for sure...one thing is for certain though...I would keep the .41 Mag. barrel I have, it has really grown on me and the wife has claimed it as "her" hunting barrel. I dont mind trading off one of the Contenders really...I can always find another frame easy enough. My main use for a SRH would be for deer hunting though, and I have always wanted a .44 Mag revolver for just that purpose. Not to mention Indiana has a small wild hog population now that is probably only going to spread...a reliable friend of mine saw one not too far from my area of residence not long ago as a matter of fact.

Does anyone have any feedback for reasons NOT to get a SRH? No! The SRH is a great gun and the size will eat up recoil. The 44 is not a real hard kicker so you might consider a Bisley for the lighter weight, but I absolutely love my 480R SRH. Put the Hogue Tamer grip on it and that 44 will feel like a 357.
Rod, too.

I have a super redhawk and I don't make any major complaints. I wish I would have gotten a bisley, it's what I really wanted but I found an excellent deal on the SRH.
If you want the SRH bad enough that you won't be happy with something else then get it.

All of my TC's were scopes, both of my SRH's have scopes, both of my SBH's were irons... I guess what I am trying to say is they all have their place. More importantly, YOU have to decide how they fit your nitch... Man, I wouldnt sell one though, you will regret it later.

I too love the SRH! I know how you feel as I sold off guns to buy others. Wish I could keep them all, but you just need to decide which ones are needed and which are just taking up space.

Those SRH's are just plain downright ugly.
Just get a 5.5" redhawk in 44 magnum and you'll be able to shoot any load the SRH can, plus you'll have a better looking revolver to boot.
Some might disagree but they probably haven’t been to an optometrist in years.

I'm 20-20 in one eye, 20-15 in the other, and I think they are gorgeous! Gorgeous how? There is beauty in function! The SRH is all business! Hard revolver to beat. I love Redhawks as well, but the grip frame and action is a lot better on the SRH......

How about the Bowen GP-44 conversion? They take a SRH Alaskan and contour it to look like a RH. The best of both worlds. Svelte good looks of the RH and the better trigger and grip of the SRH. What is not to like?

Those SRH's are just plain downright ugly. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have always thought of them as kinda mean looking, the pitbull of revolvers, but when I shot one for the first time it cemented it for me. But, like I said earlier, in 44 I would prefer something lighter and smaller like a Bisley. If going SRH, why not make use of it and get a 480R?

Not much as good as the SRH! But also look at the SBH Hunter. It is capable of 1/2" at 50 yards for a little less money. I never liked the grip on the RH and it is harder to shoot good.

Well I put the SRH on hold in a big way today. It just so happens a guy at work hear I was looking for a .44 Mag revolver...he asked me about it and we got to talking. Seems he is a big fan of the T/C Contenders also, and has an arsenal of guns hes wanting to thin down. SUPPOSEDLY...he wants to trade me a Colt Anaconda .44 Mag in like new condition (15 rounds fired) for one of my Contenders in an even trade. I'll believe it when I have the Anaconda in my hand. Due to the value of the Anaconda alone Id be a fool not to do it. Im supposed to find out Monday...we'll see.

tenderfan,
The big snake is a great gun. Have several in 44 Mag and 45 Colt. Question is, will you be able to sleep at night after you steal that gun?

Doc I think I will sleep like a baby, and have a big smile on my face doing it. I asked him if he was sure he was ok with such a lopsided trade...his reply was "I got it for a bargain myself, but I just dont like revolvers." I will still have to have it in my hands and on my way home to believe it. Will let you guys know Monday for sure.

Update...the guy with the Anaconda requested pics of the Contender and told me he would make a decision tonight, wants me to call him at 9:30 tomorrow morning. I sent him some pics and requested that he let me know if he received them with no problems. Have yet to hear anything from him, so I will call him tomorrow at 9:30. I'm on vacation all week and told him I could meet him at work to make the swap if he decides he wants to trade. He expressed concerns about firearms on company property...even tough were allowed to have firearms in our vehicles on company property so I told him no biggie we could do a trade somewhere else if he so decides. I been hoping this trade goes through all weekend, maybe tomorrow will be the day...update tomorrow.

Well I called the guy at 9:30 this morning like he asked...he said he was in a meeting to call back at noon. Called him at noon and he says hes in another meeting. Says text him in an hour...texted him and got no reply...I think the guy is full of crap to be honest. Not wastin anymore of my time contacting him, if he really wants the trade he can contact me.

Ok the guy called early actually...NOW the story is that he has to offer the Anaconda to his Father-in-Law first before he makes the trade to see if he wants it. Supposedly some sort of agreement between them whenever they want to sell or trade a gun the other has to be offered it first...ok...whatever. If thats the case then one would think that would have already been done. I have never seen anything like this.

Thats exactly what I think also. A more respectable way in my mind would be to say "Hey sorry, I have changed my mind". Rather than keep coming up with this kind of BS. Im predicting the next call, if there is one...will be to say the FIL wants the Colt, but I will buy the Contender off you. Not gonna do that, I at the very least was looking to trade for a Ruger SRH to begin with when he approached me with the trade offer for the Anaconda.

well, the anaconda is a fine pistol but if ya really want a .44 mag ya can run hard it's hard to beat the SRH. i've sure been impressed with the 454 casull and 480 models i've had.

Definately not ruling out a SRH now...although I doubt I will find a trade for one in my area. The few that have them want brand new prices for heavily used ones and trading you may as well forget.

Considering you roll your own, have you tried calling GALLERY OF GUNS they are in touch with more gun shops than anyone else and one those shops may be willing to trade the CONTENDER barrel & dies for a SRH. Just get on the wire they are also called DAVIDSON'S mind you this just off the top,as far as the SRH is ok they can handle hotter charges, they are also heavier but if you don't mind the recoil it dosen't matter!!
