Trail Gun, for the purpose of this post, is one you would carry on an outing where shooting it is not planned; except for a "necessity" ...ie you are not out hunting or plinking. One of mine is this S&W Air Lite PD .44 magnum, tucked up high on a regular belt in a Galco Phoenix holster, loaded with 3 240 grain light loads and 3 320 grain SSK hardcast full-house loads.

Good looking set up Gregg.
I like those smith air lites. Is the recoil pretty stout with the 320 grainers? lol
I don't as of yet have a rig for this purpose, but have been putting some thought into it as of lately. would like a Ruger Redhawk 4" in 44 mag with a holster like the pancake holster from Simply Rugged.
For running bear baits this fall I may ask the old man if I can borrow his Smith model 29 with a strong side nylon holster. My other rigs are set up with scopes.

I used to carry my GeeP 357, but now that it wears optics I pack my 1911 on my hip when just bumming around.
Rod, too.

My trail gun is a Glock 20 10mm. We have few black bears but it's rare to see one. If I was running bear baits I would carry my 629. Down here your more likely to run into two legged varmints checking their cash crops than any other animal that can do real damage. I feel comfortable with the G20 with 15rds of 180 xtp's loaded to a little over 1200 fps. If I ever get an aftermarket barrel I will probably be carrying it loaded with 200 grain wfngc.

It is normaly my Keltec P11 in a Fobus holster or an inside the waistband holster of my own design. It has already saved me once when a 1200 lb bull got me down,so it has proven it's worth and I do trust my life to it. It is also my daily carry.

I run around with either my 1911 running 250 lead RNFP, or my 357mag with 158grn lead RNFP or XTP's.

I have two, the top one is a Ruger Bisley Vaquero in .500 Linebaugh if I am in bear country. The bottom is a Ruger .45 Colt Bisley Blackhawk for the rest of the time. Both are by John Linebaugh.

Mine is 5.5" FA Model 97 44 special loaded with my cast RCBS 255gr. Keith bullet and 7.5 gr. Unique. I carry it in n El Paso Saddlery Threepersons when on a pants belt or a Lawrence 120 when on a gun belt. This one was a 50th B-day present from my wife.

In N.C., where I live, it's generally not legal to carry anything other than a .22 on "Game Lands" unless hunting season is in. So, when I must carry a .22 it's one of these 4 5/8" Single Sixes: If any hunting season is open, this .500WE has been getting the nod a lot:

Mine is my custom 3 Screw in 44spcl running 255gr WNFP CP's at 1050fps. The guns grip frame has been shortened and it wears a 3.5" barrel so it's basicly and ultralight. I used to carry my short barrel big bores but this little guy is so small and light and yet with the hardcast at that velocity it will work in a pinch against just about anything in North America that wants to get up close and personal.

RBH .357 Magnum loaded with either .38 Spec/W231/158gr cast or Magnum loads w/ LG/180gr Penn's. Been cheapin' out on the leather...need to get a good holster. Anyone have something used that is decent??

for normal carry I'll just use the Hunter brand holsters. I had one handed down to me that was worn out. I eventually had to duct tape it together on a hunting trip so when I got back I sent the company and email just to see if there was a warranty and sure enough there was. Even though this thing was over twenty years old and just worn out they sent me a brand new holster with no questions asked.
What barrel length Dan? I have some odd and ends around here.

Something for a 4-5/8" and another for 7.5". Leather preferably, right handed. Maybe I need to send my .357 out to have you "fit" it?

FA 83 Packer 3" with either the 45LC or the 454 cylinder, depending on the time of year. The holster is one I made for it, carries high and close. Usually loaded with Buffalo Bore hard cast. [img] [/img] [img] [/img]
If it were supposed to be easy, they'd have sent my little sister to do it.

For me it's currently a 4&5/8 Blackhawk in 45 Colt with heavy hardcast loads in a Sourdough Pancake holster.

My 4 3/4" 500WE can handle most anything I run into...
For general plinking and "play" carry, I'll put my FN 5.7 on my hip in my Blackhawk paddle -just a little lighter than the FA! If I feel a little more horsepower is needed, I'll sub in my Glock 20.

Mine is this 4-inch .454 Redhawk. I mainly run heavy .45 Colt loads through it as it is an unpleasant gun to shoot with heavy Casull loads (it desperately needs a better pair of grips -- soon!). I keep it loaded with 360 grain WFNs at about 1,100 fps.

Mine is a FA M97 5 1/2" in 45 Colt loaded with 250 gr XTPs @ about 1100 fps or the Ruger blackhawk 5 1/2" in 327 mag. The FA has a J-point on it & the Ruger wears a Burris Fast-fire. I can't see the open sights very well due to all of the time that it took me to accumulate my vast experience.

either of these two, a Ruger Redhawk in .45 colt or a S&W m1917 .45acp.

I carry a S&W 329 (44 mag) with 240 gr bullets, both cast and jacketed. For me this pretty well fits your description to a T If I'm in a area that I know has a grizzly working it I might carry my SS 5.5 Ruger Bisley in 45 colt with 300 gr cast bullets. I carry this one in a Ringler 3 in 1 Holster. It's a heavier than I like for carrying but I do feel a bit more comfortable about running into a grizzly

I usually have my '70s 38 special chiefs special 3" barrel, with a hip grip. Or before I gave it to my brother my keltec p3at. The 38 specials nice though-havent had a chance to kill anything with it yet though
