dont want to start any debates....i would like to hear what you have harvested with a 357magnum. i thinks its a versatile lil catridge and the most fun to shoot. i have taken a 6point buck, coyote, raccoon, and quite a few rabbits( with 38sp.)..all with a gp100 and blackhawk
so lets here your stories and what gun you used:)

None to tell really....carry it a lot but have not had to draw it yet! Kinda of a bummer really....may send it off to Rod for some tweaking.

I would start by saying I am not a 357 fan, but it is the only cartridge I own three guns chambered in so I must not dislike it. I don't use my 357s for hunting that often but a couple of my most memorable hunts have been with one. A few grounhogs, an alligator, and my hardest earned trophy yet- a turkey have fallen to my Taurus Tracker.

I have taken quite a lot of small game with the 357 and a fair amount of hogs. I used the old Speer 1/2 jacket 160 grain bullet. This bullet had a lead core in the shape of a semi wad cutter with a jacket to the wad cutter shoulder, The bullets killed the hogs well but did not exit often.
I also took an alligator once but with the 45 ACP, not with the 357 so that doesn't apply here

Two whitetail does and a couple of smallish hogs have fallen to my S&W 686 and the 158gr XTP. No problems at archery-esque ranges for me.
And some wabbits...

Got to shoot a coyote with my New Model Blackhawk .357 third round down the barrel. Had my target set at 25 yards and he decided to try and sneak across the trail at 50. First two rounds went under him, third rolled him. Didn't bring him home or take photo's cause he had mange so bad it was sickning, guess i did him a favor. A couple of grouse and lots of tree rats. Will have it along next deer season.

This doe was taken last week with my SP101. I have had some other missed opportunities...the most recent was a doe at 10 yds...she was big and fat, but I waited to see if it was a buck following her instead of taking the shot...she eventually busted me and ran off after giving me a good 15 seconds of broadside at 10 yds...oh well:). By the way, the gun is legal, I checked the restrictions first.... And this is my 1st post. I am excited to be on the forum! IMAG0677 by mtnbikerealtor, on Flickr

bm,
I love the 357 in all it's variations ( 38 Spl., 357 Mag, 357 Max, 357 Bain & Davis ); however, the ONE thing I don't like is the "super sonic" crack! It is a real "ear" buster! It is versatile, plinking, varmits, to big game, provided the correct bullet is selected.

I have killed deer with a .357 in a Ruger blackhawk , a Security Six, a 10 in Contender and a Marlin lever gun that I can think of. Probably 10-12 deer. I have used 160-180 gr cast, Sierra 170 gr power jacket(Discontinued),Hornady 180 xtp,Remington 180JHP, and the Speer 170 Gold Dot. All have been one shot kills and I can recall one bullet recovery and that was a 160 cast in the base of the neck. While I think there are perhaps better handgun rounds for deer I do not sell the .357 short as a deer killer in the hands of a good shooter.

Never shot any bucks with the 357,but i've shot a bunch of slick heads with it. I've had great luck with the round, using all different kinds of bullets, but most were shot with 158 and 180 XTP's. I've also taken several with the American Eagle 158 JSP factory ammo, it worked great.

I've only taken one deer with the .357 cartridge. I used an old fixed sight revolver I carred as a duty-gun back in the early 80's. I'll have to kill a few more before I form any firm personal opinions about the cartridge at anything but relatively close range. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Just one wild boar with a scoped 6" Taurus M669, moving through the brush @35 yds. Put a good shot on him. That was the only time I hunted with it, unfortunately. I was very efficient with that pistola on paper out to 50 yds and liked it alot. I traded it for the first Encore I laid my eyes on, but I do miss that little revolver.

the 357 is a fun gun for me! i love the how versatile it is....esp. where i live. in the south we have small to medium size deer, all sizes of hogs, and tons of small game/ varmints:) all well suited for the 357.

I called in a pair of grey foxes for my daughter because she's never seen one. she "dared" me to shoot one. All I had on me was my 357 blackhawk. I took the shot at 83yds - not thinking I would come close, but hit it in the front shoulders with a 140gr XTP. It was mangled so bad that I couldn't use the pelt. I was REALLY upset - didn't figure it would do so much damage!
