Bag limits?

Bag limits? - 11/14/2011 6:32 AM

I was curious about something, I know some of you guys in the east and south have liberal bag limits on deer and I was curious what your limits are where you live?

Here in Oregon you have one deer opportunity, either a general tag on the west side of the Cascades for either coastal or cascade blacktail or you can put in for a controlled hunt for mulies in several different units east of the Cascades and as of a few years ago there are some hunts for Columbia whitetail but I'm not sure if they have started a firearm season for them yet, it has been either archery or traditional muzzleloader.

The only exception to this is that you can also apply for controlled hunts for does but the best percentages right now on doe tags puts it at about 1 every 5 years. Also on the hunts mentioned above those are buck only and the general tag is forked horn and better and the mulies are anywhere from spike up to a 4x4 minimum.

In Oklahoma the limit if you hunt archery, muzzle loader, bonus doe, and gun seasons is a total of 7 with maximum 2 bucks not including any of the special draw hunts. It enables me to keep my freezers full as my wife and I eat very little beef, but mostly venison, antelope and elk.

In PA, a buck tag comes on your general license and can be used anywhere in the state. We only have one type of deer so things are not complicated here. There is an elk drawing but I've never really looked into that....not sure why, just haven't.

The general license allows you to hunt fall and spring turkey (one bird can be harvested in each season) and all small game except migratory birds.

For a doe tag, you have to mail in for those according to the WMU (Wildlife Management Unit) that you wish to hunt in. Some area sell out quick just because of the number of people that hunt and and the bag limits. Other areas have the limits so high that they never sell out. These are mainly ones closer to cities where there are problem deer and very little area to hunt.

After the initial resident doe tag draw (late July or early August) there is a round for non-residents (two weeks later). Following that, residents can send in again. I usually get two doe tags to go along with my buck tag.

Here in Indiana we have some rule changes this year. In previous years you were allowed to take a buck or a doe with your primary firearms tag, and you were allowed anywhhere from 1-7 extra bonus antlerless permits depending on what county you lived in. In my county we were allowed one antlerless permit.
This year, you can only take a buck with your primary firearms tag...but your allowed two bonus antleless permits in my county now, so in firearms season you may take a total of three deer...one buck and two does. Other counties you can tak as many as 7 extra does because the populations are so high.
When muzzleloader season comes in I will be allowed one more antlerless deer on top of a buck and two antlerless if I am able to harvest them in gun season...indiana is one buck only regardless if its taken in archery, firearms, muzzleloader, or late archery.

ny is one buck tag with license. if you get your bow and ML license you get a state wide either sex and a state wide antlerless for bow season and ML season only. then you can apply for doe permits for specific areas up to two permits. may or may not get them but they are good for any season. but even I have noticed a drop in deer numbers lately. and all the winery's around us are getting year long damage permits and can shoot a ton

so up to two bucks and three does. plus you can have doe permits singed over from another person to you.

In MS, we're allowed 3 bucks (antler size criteria applies) and 5 antlerless on a liscense. If the property you hunt is part of the DMAP program; you may be able to receive extra antlerless tags if you fill your legal bag limit.

It changes here in MN every year. Last year we could bag 5 antlerless and a buck, plus a deer in each season (archery/firearms/black powder) and this year we were allowed just one deer total. If you arrowed a buck early you couldn't shoot one later.

In Kentucky in the zone I hunt it is one buck and one doe on the general license.I can also purchase unlimited doe tags two per tag. Other zones are different. this does not include the quota hunts. Elk tags are draw only and I have not been lucky yet.I buy a sportsman license which includes two spring turkey, two fall shotgun turkey and two archery turkey,Got one the other day with a bow.

In Alabama we get unlimited does, and 3 bucks. The 3 buck rule is not enforced and people have found a way to kill as many as they want without fear of getting caught.

2 deer a day, at least one must be a doe.

Where I hunt in Eastern NC, we get 6 deer per year, no more than 4 bucks and no daily bag limit...

In various areas in SC where I hunt, it varies from 10 deer total and no more than 5 bucks in the Western Piedmont of SC to unlimited bucks and no more than 2 does/day on either-sex day in the Coastal region.

And if the bountiful deer bag limits didn't provide enough trigger time, there's the hog population.

In Ten. we can take 4 bucks per season and 3 does per day all season and no antlerless ticket required. That's alot of venison. I only take what I need, 3 or 4 fills my freezer.

I'm in with Tyler, but he forgot to mention, that you can assign your doe permits(DMU) to someone else, which allows and individual up to two additional deer. Our DMU permits are starting to become more restricted, the populations are starting to decline, I believe it is from coyote predation, the song dogs are everywhere, gut piles are cleaned up overnight, and kills that are not claimed are usually found half eaten the next morning. Like Tyler stated, agricultural producers are allowed very generous deer damage tags, that have no restrictions as far as age or sex. More bears too- bear season starts a waeek into deer season, but your liscence allows one bear.

In Ohio we can buy 6 permits. 3 of them are "anterless only" the other 3 are "either sex." Only 1 "antlered" deer may be taken during the entire hunting season. So basically you can shoot 5 does and 1 buck or just shoot 6 does if one should choose to do so.

Add all the seasons and it can reach 11 deer.
Best of all I don't need a license or extra tags. My property and over 65.
Ohio has a real choice now since I had to move here. I remember when there were hardly any deer and one a year was all you could shoot if you could find one. It got better as they moved deer from Ravenna and Plumbrook. The herd took off and there are monster bucks. Back then PA was one deer too.
I set a stand today and it looks like a cattle yard. I found scrapes about every 20 yards. But I want doe meat.
My revolvers are ready to go.

Re: Bag limits? - 11/21/2011 6:09 PM

In Michigan it varies a little depending on where you hunt but for the most part you can buy a "Combo Deer License". With that you can shoot 2 bucks but 1 has to have 4 points or more on one side. You can use those tags in archery, gun or muzzle loader seasons. In Southern Michigan on private property you can buy almost unlimited antlerless tags. You can buy 5 a day.

Re: Bag limits? - 11/21/2011 9:14 PM

Std. VA license is 6 deer. Max 3 antlered, or all antlerless when the seasons or areas allow. We can also buy extra tags after that that are good for 12 months, so can be used in the next season if you purchase late in the season.

VA logged over 250,000 deer killed last year and we are still over-run. Not enough people willing to eat does for some stupid reason.

Oh and in VA, if you hunt your own property, there are no reporting requirements, therefore....it's a free-for-all.

Okla has a 2doe, 1 buck limit(in my county) and a combined season limit of 4 does, 2 bucks, plus a holiday 'bonus' doe, the weekend before and/or after Christmas.

Re: Bag limits? - 11/22/2011 2:52 AM

We get five whitetails with a Texas license. Actual bag limits are set by county. I hunt in Coleman, Brown, Tom Green and Fayette counties. Fayette county is a one buck no doe county, however the buck must be either a spike or wider than 13 inches. Brown County has the same antler restrictions but it is 2 bucks and 3 does all seasons combined. Coleman and Tom Green are five deer not more than 3 bucks, with no antler restrictions. I spend most of my hunting time in Coleman county. We also get a 10 week firearms season so it is easy to be picky. (I'm strictly a meat hunter so that means the chubby ones)
