S/S revolver for hunting,has a deer ever noticed

looking to buy my first revolver and i want a stainless one for obvious reasons.but i am having a hard time talking my self into it.its just, i cant get over taking a big shiny revolver to the deer woods.so have you ever been busted by a deer,with your shiny revolver...

I can't say that I ever have. If I am in a stand and sun is hitting me pretty hard I will keep my gun in holster as long as possible. With my bandolera holster I have no need to have the gun out until ready to squeeze. IMO, you will be OK as long as you aren't waving the wheel at the deer like a Doc Holladay. (G)

I wouldn't worry about it. I have a stainless Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter, and a blued S&W model 28, and the blued one shines more,or should I say "flashes". Go stainless.

kingfisher what bandolera holster do you have? i figure that will be the best holster when i am 20 ft up in my climber and make it easy to get to..

Uncle Mike's. Been using it for quite a while. Works great and very comfortable on stand or stalk.

ALL of my firearms are stainless. I went to them years ago, and have gotten rid of all blued guns. I've had animals within 20 yards that sure didn't seem to care. If ya don't move, they don't care. They might look at ya for a while, but I've never even had the thought that a stainless gun cost me a critter.

I think it's a non issue. You have nothing to worry about. They pick up movement more than anything else visually.

I am with these guys, but if it still bothers you there is a third option. Ruger, and maybe others, offers some revolvers in a target grey finish which is dull, not shiny at all.

All the deer see on my SS guns is the "life saver" end of my barrel, 4 or 5 little gray M&M's in my cylinder.........What's to be scared of???????? LOL

thanks guys,i have been a die hard bow hunter for yrs and yrs,and i go to great lengths to conceal myself.so old habits die hard.i gun hunt with my 870 now and i wanted to give myself more of a challenge during fire arm season so going with a revolver from now on...

Rob, I know the feeling...have how hunted and shot plenty of deer...was worried about it too. First time I went out I had ten deer at 20 yards and shot a doe.'they had no clue.

I was the same way. I did the archery tournaments, worked in a bow shop, and hunted only archery for well over 20 years. Shot many deer, elk, and bears, but I got burned out on archery after the guys at the tournaments started taking everything so seriously instead of just having a good time. It became a "money game" like everything else when it gets popular. That, in turn, took the fun out of anything having to do with a bow.

I went rifle hunting one season, and that was to easy. Switched to revolvers the next year, and it is a great compromise between short distance bows (50 yards or so) and long range rifles (200 yds +). I love it, and have never looked back. You will also start a second hobby with this-- reloading!! They tell you its cheaper if ya reload, but don't believe it. You will shoot up the money you save anyway! You just get to shoot a lot more for the same ammount of money.

Oh, and don't worry, if ya decide you don't like stainless afterall, your SECOND one can always go back to being a blued one. You WILL have more than one!!!

ya shot alot of 3-d in the begining, but now its all hunting. i bow hunt and gun hunt to get as much time in the woods as i can.these bow hunters that look down on gun hunters and gun hunters that look down on bow hunters,really have no clue.to me its fun hunting with bow and gun.my goal is to take a trophy buck with my revolver,870 and i have one with my bow.how cool would that be 3 trophys with 3 weapons.

Yeah I'm the same way. We are all on the same team as hunters. Doesn't matter the method used.

I've never taken anything "big" for a trophy, but I've taken some that I would term a trophy just because of how difficult the hunt was! But yeah, three monsters with three weapons would be cool!!! I'm still waiting for my first big one. I always take the first legal one I see in order to fill the freezer. Someday the first one I see will be a big one. If not, I'm okay with that.

IMO a glossy blued gun catches more light than a flat/matte finished stainless gun.

IMHO, if the deer notices a big shiny revolver then you've probably already made some other mistakes that has drawn the attention. I have been concerned on occasion about other hunters and what something that can look kind of white would look like. I tend to keep things as stealthy as possible and most of my hunting handguns are stainless.

Taken several deer with a Super Redhawk and none ever gave any indication they saw the finish on it.

I don't think it matters much in terms of the finish. Motion is the key. Of course, anything is possible.

Handgun hunting will be much like bow hunting except you probably can reach out a bit more if you need to and you practice.

My first year hunting was with an Ithaca 16ga M37 pump. Getting a rifle was a real priority for me as a teen.

I read somewhere that one state has rolled handgun hunting into the black powder season. That would be absolutely great as far as I'm concerned.

If you really think the SS guns are messing up your hunt...beadblast them to get rid of the shiny finish.
I saw a guy at a SASS shoot that beadblasted Vaqueros and they actually looked pretty good.

SS is the way to go, got a gold Desert Eagle in a trade 44mag buddy said i would never be able to shoot a deer with it. Shot two and he lost 20 bucks on the bet.

IMHO, they will notice the movement before they notice the color.


My bow strings are red and yellow. I have had a huuuudge buck notice that I moved my hand two intches to attach my release, but they have never noticed the strings.

never had a prob with s/s even took lots of turkey and they see better they say....

I would definitely spend the extra money on stainless. If it rains or snows, just wipe it off and no worries. I keep my handgun on my lap while sitting at my stand. If you get a blued handgun wet, you have to thoroughly dry it off and re oil it before you put it away. I jusy like the look of stainless .

Not that I can recall. I think the blaze orange that we are required to wear is much more of an "eye catcher!"

I am also a life long bow hunter, most of the stainless guns are pretty unobtrusive, some of the high gloss guns like the Ruger Vaqueros really shine, but the brushed finish guns probably are no more reflective than the high gloss blue guns. Ruger used to have a grey finish that was available on their Super Redhawks.

I had a 4" nickeled mod. 29 and never had any problem spooking game with that gun.
