Anyone interested in Africa this August? - 01/22/2013 11:04 PM

I'm forming a small group to go to South Africa this August.
If you're interested shoot me a private message or reply here and I can provide more details.

The hunt can be for plains game as well as buffalo / lion.

Don't just kick the tires come on let's go. Just so you're aware of the situation, the cost of a safari is about to skyrocket. Botswana has closed hunting at the end of 2013. They will only be offering photo safaris... Zambia, previously a handgun friendly country, has closed all hunting in 2013 and beyond, Zimbabwe is considering the same.

This amounts to anti-hunting organizations paying millions to the "government" of these countries to close sport hunting. If you want to hunt Africa now is the time...

So give me an idea of money needed for the hunt fees and trophy fees; then I can add plane fare etc. and get an idea of what the total might cost.

Let's say: Gemsbok, Kudu, Impala, wart hog, and maybe one or two others??? How long a hunt? Are we looking at say 5K, 10K or 15K, or?

+1

Always wanted to hunt Africa, however the cost is the largest hurdle right now.

There are several options depending on what you want. I would probably go with a package (if it includes animals you want) and then add on others a-la-cart for the trophy fee plus a daily rate.

Daily Rates: Plainsgame
1 Client and 1 Professional Hunter $450
2 Clients and 1 Professional Hunter (each) $350
Non-Hunting Observer $250

If you want Buffalo they are $12,500 for 5 days and 1 buff. Lioness can be added for $5900 and may take an additional couple of days. You can certainly do a plains game/buffalo hunt but I would plan on at least 7 days and 10 would be better.

Airfare in August is going to run you about $2400 from Atlanta to Johannesburg.

Package A:
Price: $6,650
- 10 days hunting
- 11 Nights accommodation - 7 trophies
Animals:
- Gemsbuck
- Zebra
- Blue Wildebeest
- Impala
- Blesbuck
- Warthog
- Steenbuck

Package B:
Price: $4,800
- 7 days hunting
- 8 Nights accommodation - 4 trophies
Animals:
- Kudu
- Impala
- Steenbuck
- Warthog

Package C:
Price: $4,900
- 7 days hunting
- 8 Nights accommodation - 4 trophies
Animals:
- Blue Wildebeest
- Impala
- Zebra
- Warthog

Packages Include:
- Services of professional hunter.
- Hunting Vehicle.
- Trackers and Skinners.
- Accommodation, all meals, soft drinks, beer and wine.
- Daily laundry service.
- Field Preparation of trophies. - Hunting Licenses.

Packages Exclude:
- All air travel.
- Pre and Post Safari accommodation and meals.
- Rifle hire and ammunition if requested.
- The preparation, dipping, packing, documentation and
export of trophies from South Africa.
- Gratuities.
- Trophy Fees on additional animals taken.
- 14% Government tax on daily rate.

Gregg,

You could do package B for $4800 + $1100 for a Gemsbuck.
You would be looking at $5900 for 7 days.
Worst case the Gov't. Value Added Tax (VAT 14%) would be about $450.
Plus your airfaire ~$2400 + fare from CO to Atlanta.
There would be about another $100 to 200 to expedite your handgun permits. That's really about it except for gratuities to your PH and trackers.

So for Package B, 10 grand should about cover it?

10K would easily cover pkg B.

Gary, I won't lead you on; being down with this knee surgery I won't be able to go back to work for at least two-three months...so my finances will be a really hurtin'...but please know that if any small chance at all came up I would be on it in a heart beat. Would like nothing better than to hunt with you and some members in Africa...

Now, that being said, how soon do you need to know, need a deposit, etc?

Thanks for offering this opportunity.

A deposit of $1500 will cover a plains game hunt but will need 50% on the buffalo if anyone is interested in that. I would like to get a deposit within the next 30 days or so. There are essentially 3 spots still available if you want to be there at the same time I will be.

For what its worth, I would HIGHLY recommend hunting 1X1 rather tha 2X1 on a short safari like these. If you get paired as I did on my first safari 23 years ago, with a guy that can't/doesn't shoot well, you may spend a lot of your valuable hunting time tracking his wounded game. Hunting 1X1, there will still be plenty of time for socializing back in camp.

You guys need to jump on this. We've been twice (so far) and Gary's prices are about spot on with what we paid. As they say, you'll be planning your next trip on your flight home. You'll shoot more game, enjoy a great time in a different country, and meet some great folks for the same price as a trophy guided whitetail or elk hunt. Plus you'll have some unique critters on the wall. Afterall, many have whitetail mounts but how many have a nice gemsbok? Our flight in Sept was a bit less than mentioned (around $1700 DFW-ATL-JNB) but it might be due to the seasonal costs.

My next trip in a couple of years will be for a cape buffalo w/ the handgun. My hunting buddy took one on our latest trip this past Sept.

I'd recommend getting a meet and greet service plus paying to get your gun permits cleared before you go. You'll go to the head of the line with the paperwork already taken care of so as soon as your guns show, you'll be out the door.

Sign up, go, and enjoy. You only live once!

Guy’s

At this point in time I believe South Africa is the most Handgun Hunter friendly country in Africa. We at the Handgun Hunters association of Southern Africa also did lots of education and promotion work to get game farmers to acknowledge handgun hunting and I can say the effort put in already started to bear fruit.

I’m not an outfitter or professional hunter but I’m willing to help in seeking for good deals especially on soft skin game up to Eland but don’t exclude the Big 5. A friend of mine got a 3000 hectare farm in the Limpopo province with 21 species of game and could be worth a try.
